X-Ray Survey Goes Over Goalj
The mobile cheat X-ray unit will
wind up its two weeks stay in
Cherokee, Clay, and Graham coun
ties this week end. The unit will
make X-rays in Hayesville and
Robbinsville Friday and Saturday.
Some 4,220 X-rays were made in'
Cherokee County and it is believed
that the survey will go well over j
its goal of 7,000 X-rays for this trl- J
county area.
A breakdown shows that some
204 X-rays were made at Ranger;
208 at Hiwassee Dam ; 266 at Mar- :
tin's Creek; 1,435 at Marble and
Andrews; and 2,035 in Murphy. I
During the two weeks visit of
the unit as many X-rays were '
made as were made sevefal y6ars
ago when the unit was in the coyn
ty for one month.
Nursing Course
Is Offered
A Red Cross course on "Home
Care of the Sick" will be taught
at the John C. Campbell Folk
School April 21 and 22, and April
25 , 26, and 27.
The course will be sponsored by
the Cherokee and Clay Counties
Home Demonstration Councils.
Instructor for the course will be
Mrs. Margaret Fisher, a public
Health nurse from Hendersonville.
The full adult course offered in
home nursing instruction is de
signed to equip the homemaker to
meet the everyday emergencies of
family health, it was announced.
Persons interested in the course
can contact one of the Red Cross

Demonstration agent.

pointed out that, "There is a criti

has some knowledge of home nurs

Deadline For Co.
History Material
Is Set April 15
A final plea for information for
the Cherokee County History now
being compiled was sent out to
day.
The deadline for information is
tomorrow, Friday, April 15. Mrs.
C. S. Freel of Andrews is writing
the history for the Cherokee Coun
ty Historical Society.
Mrs. Freel said that a number
of persons have responded on in
formation about early county fami
lies, but that the Information has
been too short and sketchy. She
said she needs more facts a)jout
early families of Cherokee Qounty
as well as Clay and (^ra^am fami
lies.
Mrs. Freel would also like to bor
row pictures of the fountain as it
was on the Murphy square; pictur- 1
es of former court houses; and a
picture of the late Spence Perry.
She said the pictures will be re
turned.
Crippled Children's
Drive Passes Goal
The current drive for the Crip- 1
pled Children's Society has already
gone over last year's figures since
some $1,307.34 was reported turned
in this week.

Regal Club Plans
Special "Clean Up"
The Regal Club of Murphy will
sponsor a "Clean-Up Week" In
Murphy from April 25 through
April 30.
It Is expected that Town Coun
ell will vote to have a special
stand-by garbage truck available,
to pick up trash during that week. I
The club is asking residents to
make a special effort *c clean up
paper and other trash around their
homes during that week.
Mrs. Hooper, 81,
Dies After Illness
Mrs. Lillie Htfoper, 81. died Sat
urday, April 9, at 2 p. m. in her
home near Robbinsville after a
lingering illness.
She was a native of Haywood
County, ' daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Taylor Alexander, and
had resided in Graham Count, 87
years.

Plans Announced
A series of revival services will
begin at 7:30 p. m., Aprif 18, at
the First Baptist Church, Andrews
with the Rev. Marshall Weaver,
pastor of the Kelly Baptist Church

Rufty Re-elected
By School Board
J. E. Rufty was re-elected sup
erintendent of schools for a two
year term during a recent meeting
of the Andrews Board of Education,
the board announced this week.
A survey of all teachers in the
school unit, made on the day the
board met, gave Mr. Rufty an
overwhelming vote of confidence,
the board said.
The survey was called by the
board.
Each of the teachers in the four
schools which make up the school
unit was given a questionnaire, the
board explained.
The questionnaire listed traits of
personality, character, leadership
and professional ability.
The teachers were asked to check
the questionnaire without consult
ing anyone else. No names were
signed to the completed question
naairea.
The survey results showed, the
board said, that more than 90 per
cent of the answers checked on
the questionnaire were favorable
to Mr. Rufty.

heard Merle Davis speak on the in
dustrial development of the south

Mr. Davis pointed out that Mur
phy is strategically located for in
dustrial development, being locat
ed between Charlotte and Atlanta.
He said Murphy needs to expand
with small industries rather than
large ones because of the over
crowding that could arise from a
large plant having to import a
large percentage of skilled and
technical personnel.

to 30 years and some 38 other cases
were handled in the final days of
the just ended term of Superior
Court here.
Adams pleaded guilty to second
degree murder Monday in a new
trial in the slaying of Luther Car
ringer, a neighbor last Sept. 6.
Adams was sentenced to life im
prisonment last Nov. II after he
was convicted of first degree mur
der in Carringer's death.
The State Supreme Court grant
ed the new trial after ruling that
the charge to the Jury by Judge
Walter K. Johnston of Winston-Sa
lem was defective.
Judge Dan K. Moore handed
down the 27 to 30 year sentence in
the new trial April 11.
Court adjourned Monday after
noon after some 112 criminal cases
and some 12 civil cases were dis
posed of.
Other cases included: J. D. Tay
lor. resisting arrest, six months
sentence suspended for three years.
