Howell was named chair man of the newly created board of supervisors of the Graham County Soil Conservation District. Clyde Carringer is vice-presi dent and Bruce Lewis is secretary - treasurer. The soil district was created by voters of the county in ecember, 1953 and a charter from the sec retary of state was granted March 16, 1964. Since Feb. 1, 1955 Harry J. Cherry, Jr., has been serving as work unit conservationist. Since that time several farmers have made use of the service in making SAVE ON ICE CREAM! Other farmers may get technical assistance on installing drain tile by contacting any member at the board of supervisors or the soil technician. Assistance can also be given on conirrigation, open ditch drainage, contour rows, farm ponds, rota tions, strip cropping and farm plan ning. The soil conservation service's basic objective, Mr. Cherry said, is "to use each acre of agricultur al land within its capabilities and treat each acre of agricultural land according to its needs." The service is an agency of the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture and was established by Congress in 1935. It is the successor to the Soil Erosion Service which was started in 1933. The first district in the U. S. was organized in Anson County. N. C. in 1937 and since that time every county in North Carolina has been set up as a Soil Conserva tion District. Graham HD Council Sets Tea Saturday The Home Demonstration Coun cil of Graham County will enter tain at a tea and open house in the county home and farm agents' of fice in the Graham County Court house Saturday from 2 to 4 p. m. The tea has been arranged in ob servance of National Home Demon stration Club week which was last week. All women of the county and Robbinsville are invited to attend. The receiving: line will be made up of council officers and club pres idents will assist in serving. Of ficers are Mrs. Blaine Carver, chairman; Mrs. David Riddle, vice chairman and Mrs. John McRae. secretary. Mrs. Hardy Sharpe, newly elect ed district federation president, will also receive. The Graham County Board of Education Monday elected Guy S"tton of Sylva as superintendent of County Schools after, by two to one vote, they had refused to re hire Supt. K. S. Clem to the post. The action was taken at a special meeting called some two weeks a go. A petition wtai some 1,202 signa tures was presented in behalf of Clem's election. In earlier action the board had .rehired Mrs. Gladys Jordan as I secretary and Robert Carr as sup ervisor. Attend Auxiliary Meet At Font an a The following members of the American Legion Auxiliary of Rob binsville attended the District Meet ing at Font&na on Thursday, May 5: Mrs. Ed Corpening, Miss Ellen Carver. Mrs. Lloyd Millsaps, Mrs. Wayne Carringer and Mrs. James Herrington. Mrs. Corpening gave the re sponse to the welcome and Mrs. Herrington gave the report of the Robbinsville unit. 300 Graham Children Get Polio Vaccine Some 300 Graham County first J and second graders will receive j their second Salk polio vaccine in I jections before the end of school, j The children received the first injection in April. Children from Mountain View and Stecoah schools came into Robbinsville where the clinic was set up. The first and second grade popu lation in Graham County is around 450. The vaccine went to the some 300 whose parents requested it. The shots were administered by Dr. Nettie Parrette and Dt. R. G. Parrette. Mrs. Gerald Postelle and Miss Helen Ghormley assisted. Mrs. L. W. Wilson and Mrs. Lewis Enloe served as registration as sistants. Mrs. Joe Carver and Mrs. Eloise Walls gave suckers to the child ren. The candy was donated by local merchants.
