The eggs hatch into larvae, which eat the cambium, thus killing the tree. Consult your Forester when bugs attack your trees. Warning Given i Of Pine Beetles I I Those fading yellow to red-color ed patches of pines you saw a few weeks ago are now dead but the In sect that killed them is still living. According to Assistant County Agent L. V. McMahan they have taken up residence in fresh live trees. I Farmers and other land owners who have patches of dead pines should examine live trees beside the dead ones to see if these are also infested by the Southern Pine Beetle. The only external evidences of attack on green trees are brownish pitch tubes on the outer surface of bark scales and brown boring dust in bark crevices and around the base of the tree. If these symptoms are present, peel off some of the bark to exam ' lne the inside. . If beetles are pres ent, there will be winding S-shaped galleries in the inner bark. The in fested trees should be cut and re moved promptly. Trees of sawlog size should have the slabs burned immediately. If the trees are sold for pulpwood, the pulp mill should be notified that the load is Infested so the wood will' be processed immediately. Tops and slash should be careful ly examined for presence of beetles and if they are present they should fbe piled and burned, if feasible, or I sprayed with the insecticide, i Where it is not practical to Salvage the infested trees they should be cut and sprayed with B.
