Merk of Murphy last week appeared on an afternoon show over Channel 13. Chattanooga, TV. In his shrine clown suit, Merk was "Dr. Quack" on the program. On Saturday night, Merk. and other Shrine clowns were in the ceremonies at which Miss Chat tanooga was crowned during the in termission at the Chattanooga Birmingham baseball game. Merk again clowned Monday night at the special Shrine Bowl game in Chattanooga. Mr. Merk's clown name is "Hl-Lo". Hear Garden Club President Miss Frances Cover, president of the Valley River Garden Club, was guest speaker at the meeting of the Andrews Lions Club last week In the Shell Dining Room. Miss Cover discussed garden therapy in connection with the work being done for the blind, in cluding the fact that the National Garden Book and other gardening books have been translated Into Braille. She outlined the history of the National Federation of Garden Clubs and its local connection. McClure, Federation presi dent, acting as master of cere monies. Assistant County Agent L. V. McMahan cited the Federation for its sponsorship of the 4-H Pullet Chain program and announced the names of nine county boys and girls who have done outstanding work in this program. She was a lifelong resident of Cherokee County, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Tallent James. Surviving are the husband, Geor ge Hartness; two daughters. Mrs. Floyd Laney of Brasstown, Mrs. Icle Allen of Goldbeach, Ore., one son. Jack of Murphy; 39 grandchil dren; and two brothers, Asa and Allen James of Route 3, Murphy. Funeral services were held at 10 a. m. Wednesday in Ebenezer Bap tist Church. The Rev. Weldon West officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. I vie Funeral Home was in charge. Met** were honored on their 80th Wedding An niversary with open house and tea at their home on Quail's Creek, near Hayesvllle, Sunday, July 17, from 2 to 8 p. m. The tea table was overlaid with a green linen cloth under white lace. A three-tiered gold and white Sake centered the table and was flanked by gold candlesticks with white candles. Tellow and gold gladioli and dahlias were arranged throughout the house. | Tea was presided over by Mrs. J. Q. Miller, Mrs. Charles Thompson, and Mrs. E. C. Mease, Jr., of Atlanta, Ga., Misses Elisabeth Gray and Robbie Penland of Murphy. Receiving at the door were Mrs. Burke Gray, and Mrs. J. R. Pen land of Murphy and Mrs. Peggy Zimmerman of Hayesville. Mrs. Inez Kahn presided over the guest book. HONOREES Mr. and Mrs. Mease received their guests in the living room an t were seated on a cherry love-seat that was handed down from four generations of the Mease family. Mrs. Mease wore a sheer violet dress with white accessories and a white orchid corsage. Mrs. Mease is the former Miss Jessie Passmore, daugh ter of the late Prof, and Mrs. T. B. Passmore of Cley Coun ty. Mr. Mease is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Mease of Haywood County. He moved to Clay County at an early age, and has been engaged in farming and surveying for the past 70 years.
