Mrs. Hall and Family 42-ltp Children Should Practice Safety Rules, Too "It's one strike and you're out when you play ball in the street". In those words Wallace Hyde this week warned children to stay out of streets when they play. Hyde is a former football coach and athletic director now in charge of the Motor Vehicles Depart ment's Driver improvement sec tion. ? > He urged the youngsters to do their part in the Child pedestrian program which the vehicles agency supports the year around. "Your folks aren't trying to be spoil-sports when they tell you not to play In the streets," Hyde said. "They know that playing in the Roadway is a pretty good way to get hurt, and it's not very smart to pay for an afternoon's fun with weeks or months in bed." Hyde pointed out that teachers, policemen and drivers are all co operating in the program to help keep children safe in traffic, but there's not much else they can do without the help of the boys and girls themselves. "Tour safety la your own napoo sibllity," he reminded the young people. "When you're out with other boy* and girls, you're on ^your own. No grown-upa can help you then, ao lt'a up to you to foty low aafety rulea." Hyde's section of the vehicles de partment formulated these rulea for children to follow in traffic: 1. Obey all traffic officers, school patrols, traffic signs, sig nals and pavement markings. 2. Use roller akates, scooters, wagons, and tricycles on the aide walk only. S. Practice the rulea learned in school about crossing streets and playing in unsafe places. 4. Always take the safest route between school and home. 5. Walk on the left aide of the road, facing traffic, if there. are no sidewalks. These additional rulea are for I bicycle riders 1. Obey all traffic signs, aig and laws. 2. Ride on the far right of the street-with traffic. t 8. Don't weave or stunt, and, never hitch , on to a passing ve hicle. 4. Keep your bike in good con dition.
