You i knew him as Robert Schmidt who wroto this column for five years. He built the house for his own pleasuro and enjoyment and, be lieve me, he is having the time of his life. This particular house is 14 feet wide, 18 feet long and is construct ed of aluminum and glass. It has a ground bed in the center, and two raised benches on either side which are as long as the building. The ground level bed is four feet wide and the benches three feet. -This leaves space for walkways. Heat is supplied by bottled gas and con trolled by automatic ventilators which maintain a constant temper ature. This house cost him a little less than $2,000 with water and electric connections. Due to his physical condition, it was neces sary that he hire all work done. Now, you say this is too much and not practical for me. I agree, but this is not the end of the story. We have figured that the house could have been built for less than half the amount it cost him by: using redwood instead of alum inum ; hand controlled ventilators instead of automatic; and doing the Job yourself. Anyone who can read a simple blue print can con struct one of these houses for the cost of materials. Materials for % small houses can be supplied in several dimensions and fabricated by the manufacturer. In addition, ; they can be placed against the south side of a building and heated from tho heating unit in your house. In this case the side of the building will serve as the north wall o' tho greenhouse. While I pass his greenhouse al most every day, I had not stopped recently to check on the plant ma terials he has growing. Here is a partial list : tomatoes, lettuce, ; snapdragons, sweet peas, poinset- 1 tia? begonia, coleus, lemon plant rubber plant, geraniums, amary Ills, orchids, ageratum, snake plant I fuchsia, oleander and three kinds | of philodendron. He has propagated most of the plants himself and all are growing in pots of various sizes except tomatoes, lettuce and snapdragons. These are in the ground bed. BOXY E. GARRISON Pvt. Billy E.
