FLOODS EVERYWHERE i The Andrews and Marble Schools were forced 'to stop classes en Thursday, January 81 due to heavy ' rains and flooded roads. Some students were still not able to attend school on Friday and the attendance was somewhat lower than usual. MONOGRAM CLUB MEETS The AHS Monogram Club held an organisation meeting on January 25 in Coach Meannle's classroom. They elected officers as follows: President, Jerry Pulllum; Vice President, Lloyd Derreberry, Sec retary, Kent Laughter ;an dMaster of Arms, Bill George. The club took notes and decided that If you letter In your freshman year you will be given a sweater. If you letter in your senior year you will be given a Jacket. The next meeting of thee lub will be held on February 18. MARCH OF DIMES UNDERWAY Mr. Charles O. Frazier, principal of the Andrews Elementary School announced that the March of Dimes Drive, is now underway in the school. The drive will close in the Elementary School on February 8. PRACTICE TEACHERS ATTEND WOC CONFERENCE The Andrews Elementary School practice teachers .attended the Western Carolina College mid term conference on February 1 and 2. They are Miss Joyce Baldwin, who is practicing in Mrs. Price's room; Miss Grace Erwin, in Mrs. Elliott's room; Miss Sybil Jean Bradshaw, in Mrs. McGuire's room and Miss Caroline Hendrix, in Mrs. Ford's room . Farmers Can Use ACP Practices in Soil Bank Land Farmers can receive cost-share assistance through the Agricul tural Conservation Program for performing ACP practices on their land while it is in the Soil Bank, A. J. Barton, chairman of the Cherokee ^County Agricultural Stab ilization and Conservation commit tee. pointed out this week. Applications are now being re ceived for the 1957 ACP at the Cherokee County ASC office, lo cated at the Courthouse. All farm ers are invited to participate and all applications will receive equal consideration, Mr. Barton empha sized. Requests for Federal Con servation cost-sharing must be fil ed with the County Committee be. fore any practice is started. The Federal Allocation to Chero kee County for cost-sharing under the 1957 ACP is $34,963.00. Under the 1956 program, farmers in this county received $44,737.00. Nine ACP practices have been approved for this year. Any ACF practice is eligible for approval on land in Acreage Re serve of the Soil Bank but Soil Bank provisions of no grazing and no harvesting must be met. Any ACP practice for which cost-sharing is not authorized un der the Conservation Reserve. of the Soil Bank, may also be carried out on Conservation Reserve Land and is eligible for approval for co -f. sharing under the ACP, chair man Barton explained. Atten dance for the Murptay-Hlwassee Dam gam* was leas than any ether home gams of this season. Some of the near-by rohds were submerged. In fact, the Valley River rose higher than It had ris en in many years. On Thursday the school dismiss ed classes at 2 o'clock because high water made roads between school and some student's homes danger ous to travel. For the same reason school attendance on Friday was low. ASSEMBLY The high school was given a musical treat by some of Its mem bers during assembly Monday, January 28. Sue Miller and Ann Gladson sang a duet, "Blue Hours." Ann played the piano ac companiment, while they sang. Wanda West, played the piano and sang "Hound Dog". Later in the program she also played Pinetop | Smith's "Original Boogie." Kath leen and Dorothy Roberts sang a number of popular times, among them "The Banana Boat Song," "The Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel, " "Young Love," "Search ing," "You're The Reason I'm In Love," "Singing the Blues," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Heart Break Ho tel," "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again", and "Rock-a-bye Boogie." WELCOME - ? ? .. Murphy High welcomes six new girls who have recently transferr ed from other schools. They are Reva Rast, grade 9, from Orange burg, S. C. ; Betty Jean Hyatt grade 9 from Burlington, N. C.; Florence McGill grade 9 from, Copperhill Tenn. ; Judy Roberts, grade 9 from Hialeah, Fla.; Mary Jane Raye, grade 10, from Marietta, Ga. and June Simonds, grade 12, from Cop perhill, Tenn. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Coach Mc Connell and Mr. Puett; Each has a new son. Christopher Ralph Mc Connell, born January 22, is the first child of Coach and Mrs. Mc Connell. Mr. McConnell is a form er member of the Murphy faculty. Walter Edward Puett, boAi Jan uary 24, is the Puett's third child. They have a daughter/ Terrill and a son, Terry.
