April 2-3 r - r I CHEROKEE COUNTY FARM NEWS By PAUL NAVE County Agent By JAMES ADAMS Assistant County At eat A total of 570,000 pine seedlings were furnished by the Tennessee Valley Authority for Cherokee County. These seedlings were plant ed by 109 land owners. There was 50,000 white pines; 212,000 shortleaf and 308,000 loblol ly. This is a lot of trees for one county to plant in one year, but there are many more acrcs of land that could be planted to trees. The County Agent's office will have information and application blanks for pine seedlings available sometime after the first of July. There is a possibility that there wiil not be any free trees next year from the TVA. They may all be assigned to the State Nursery and have to be ordered through them. We will know after July 1, qnd will be glad to have all pers ons interested in obtaining seed lings to come by the office. Paul L. Nave County Agent - Should alfalfa be seeded alone or with orchard grass? Factors favoring mixtures: A mixture la more flexible - has more uses. There Is a better chance for a successful stand. Orchard Trass will usually grow in areas of he field where the alfalfa fails be cause of soil conditions. Grass nakes curing easier. ' If you are seeding your first al falfa, it is usually best for you to ise a mixture. Since alfalfa is one if the most exacting crops as to -soil, lime, plant food, and other needs you may fail to get a satis factory stand when these needs are not met. The use of orchard grass with alfalfa will help Insure a satisfactory stand of hay mixture in many cases where the stand of alfalfa alone will be unsatisfactory.
