Tar Heels are dping something a bout the deadly kiljer. Here's what we heard from a Raleigh businessman over the lun cheon-table the other day: "We've done a great job with TB. We've made ital progress with Polio. We want to get Cancer out of the way next." What's happening with the gen eral public is a direct parallel to the fast pace in the cancer re search laboratories. Scarcely a week now. but dramatic stories a bout the progress in cancer re North Carolina newspapers. Here's what one of the State's search make the front pages of most distinguished cancer research ers, Dr. Wayne Bundles of Duke University says: "Cancer research Is just now truly exciting. We are at the end of the beginning." Dr. Rundles, like other research men and women at Bowman-Gray, Uni versity of North Carolina and Duke medical schools, is at work on a specialized area of cancer research under a grant from the American Cancer Society. To prove the Interest of North Carolinians in cancer, Glenn Crih field of High Point, State Cancer Crausade chairman, reports that a look at early 'returns from , the April Crusade show that "contri butions this year are running 300 percent ahead of previous years in some sections. Make no mistake, though. We need all we can get. This may be the year we turn the tide. The attack on cancer is the broadest, best organized, and most expensive in the whole field of med ical science." While they wait anxiously for news from the research laborator ies, muse about prospects of a vaccine that will cure cancer, and Join in the state-wide canvass for funds. North Carolinians are using resourcefulness in educating their own about cancer, and in perform ing services for the thousands of cancer patients in the State. Cancer is the number Two Kill er in North Carolina. There were 4,100 Tar Heel deaths from cancer last year, and an estimated 16,000 persons will suffer from the dis ease this year within our State. FFA To Hold Big Rally In Asheville Soon Nearly five hundred Future Far mers of America and ? vocational agriculture teachers from 25 west ern North Carolina counties will assemble in Asheville on May 17th and 18th for a giant raUy. This marks the 3rd time such a district gathering of vocational agricultural students has been held in Asheville. In charge will be the teachers of agriculture and H. E. Beam, Dis trict Supervisor of Agricultural Ed ucation for the State Department of Public Instruction. An outstanding feature of the ral ly will be the Parlimentary Proced ure Contest. The winning teams from 9 federations within the dis trict will be competing for top hon ors. A parlimentary procedure team consists of six students and the teacher of agriculture. The teacher does not participate except in the opening and closing cere mony. Each team has a total of IS minutes to demonstrate various abilities in parliamentary proce dure using one of nine subjects. The subjects to be discussed by a team is unknown to the members until they are ready to perform The winning FFA team in this con test will receive a $15.00 prize in addition to representing western North Carolina at the statewide contest finals in Raleigh this sum mer. The Future Farmer of Amer ica Ritual and Parliamentary Con test is designed to encourage train ing for proficient participation in the conduct of meetings. The future farmers, representing 95 high schools will compete in various other contests, including dairy judging, beef and swiiw judging, and public speaking con tests.
