La Vean Hinton Honored With ; Bridal Shower Miss La Vein Hinton, bride ' elect of R W. Wiggins, Jr., of At ' lanto, Georgia, was honored last Thursday night at a surprise mis ' cellaneous shower by Mrs. James ' Israel, Mrs. Tom Palmer and Mrs ' Joe Fowler. 9 The shower was held at the home of Mrs. Israel, which was beaut; ' fully decorated with red roses, snow balls and iris. The table holding the many gifts was center ed with red roses. After several games were play ? ed the honoree was assisted in op ' ening the gifts by her mother, 1 Mrs. Gladys Hinton, which were admired by all the guests. Mrs. L. B. Nichols left Saturday to attend hte graduation of her nephew Sammy Anders in Villa Rica, Ga. Mrs. C. L. Johnson has returned to her home in Valleytown after a visit in Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. O. A. Reschke of Highlands spent the weekend at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Glenn and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Glenn and their two sons of Black Mountain were guests of Mrs. Glenn's brother, Mr. Irvin Nichols and his family for the week-encf. Zeb Conley Jr. who is employed with General Electric in Atlanta, Ga. spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Conley. Miss Dorcas Ann McGuire stu dent nurse at the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon McGuire. Miss Mabel Fisher left Sunday for New York City for a weeks stay with relatives. Capt. A1 Swan, Mrs. Swan and their two children Mary Elizabeth and Caroline of Washington, D. C. have returned after a weeks stay with their parents, Capt. and Mrs. Frank Swan and Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Davis. Mrs. Harve Younce has returned to her home after a week's stay in the Southwestern Memorial Hospi tal. Mrs. Ruth S. Pullium left Wed nesday for a week's stay in New nan, Ga. with her father and with her sister Mrs. SsTunders and her family in Atlanta, Ga. Miss Ada Mae Pruett left Tues day for her home in Ellenboro, fol lowing the closing of the Andrews school. Costello Hostess To Baptist Youths Sun, The young ladies' Sunday School class and Youth Choir of Murphy Baptist Church were entertained at breakfast Sunday morning at the home of their leader, Mrs. W. V Costello. Five high school seniors were honorees. The girls, Misses La Vean Hinton, Winnie Hubbard, Patricia Moore, Linda Palmer and Becky Rhodes were presented with necklaces engraved with their names. Others present were Misses Car olyn and Ruth Bates, Mary Lou Kirkland, Gloria Bowman, Linda English, Nita Kimbrough, Annette White, and Nancy Mills. Those un able to attend weare Judy Davis and Winnie Hubbard. Farner Church To Celebrate Birthday Party i The Women of the Farner Pres byterian Church will celebrate their annual Birthday Party, Thursday, May 30, at 7:45 p. m. at the new Farner Presbyterian Church. Mrs. G. H. Butler, the president of the W.O.C. will conduct the wor ship service. This year our objec tive is to assist in the student work in Mexico and in the medical work in Korea. An offering will be taken for this' purpose. A group of young people will sing. The following piano pupils are slated for a recital at this program. The boys are Donnie Dean, Robert Deal, Douglas Newman, Eddie Un derwood, Danny Dale, Billy Kil patrick and Bobby Haire. The girls are: Janice Wilcox, Sarah Fay Newman, Nancy Kilpa trick, Bar bara Haire, Judy Boring, Bernice McJunkins, Mary Ruth Padgett. Wanda Spurting, Florence Ann Spur ling, Barbara Jean Taylor and De loras Walker. A very cordial invitation is ex tended to all. Refreshments will be served. Eighth Graders Entertained By Mr. Russell Alvin Russell, Murphy School eighth grade teacher, entertained his class at a picnic Friday night, May 17, at the Bob Easley Farm. The some 50 students and their guests roasted hot dogs over an op en fire and then enjoyed active games. Andrews Dance Team Honored With Dinner By Mr. Henn P. J. Henn of Murphy honored the Andrews Bop Dancing group with a dinner Saturday evening at the Shell Dining Room. Butch Love and Kent Laughter were voted the best all around at the exhibition of individual num bers and of the group performance staged at the Valley Drive In The atre on Friday evening. Participants on the dance team who attended the dinner were: Miss Joyce Deaton and Mr. Butch Love, Miss Ruthie Almond and Mr. Kent Laughter; Miss Anita Luther and Lloyd Derreberry; Miss Jan Hogsed and Mr. Dickie Higdon; Miss Beverly Tankersley and Mr. Jackie Allen; Miss Terry Slagle and Mr. Bob Slagle; and Miss Mar tha Derrebefry and Mr. Bob Mar tin. Hostesses for the occassion which included teenage girls were Ann Parker and Barbara Griffith, class-mates of the hoooree. The TAC was beautifully decor ated in pink and white and refresh ments consisted of punch, mints, ice cream and nuts. High Hat Party Slated At New Regal Hotel Wed. The Cherokee Rose Garden Club will sponsor a "High Hat" bene fit bridge party Wednesday, May 29, at 1:30 p. m. at the New Regal Hotel. Tickets to the party which will be $1.00 per person will be avail able at the door or may be ob tained from club members. Everyone is urged to wear an unusual hat, and prizes will be given for the most original hat, the most garden like, the most fantis tic and the prettiest. Andrews Youths To Conduct Revival Services Youth Week and Youth Led Re vival will begin Thursday night (tonight) at 7:30 at the First Bap tist Church, Andrews and continue through Sunday night May 26. In preparation for the all-youth revival, Youth deacons met at the church at 3 p. m. Sunday. Young people from nine to twenty-lour assembled for prayer, fellowship and refreshments at 7:30 Tuesday night. On Wednesday night pray er services were conducted by youths. Guests speakers will include students from Carson Newman Col lege. In addition to the evening services to be held Thursday, Fri day, Saturday and Sunday nights, services will also be held each morning at 10:00 o'clock. Jerry Pullium will serve as pas tor for the week. Other officers are Clerk, Martha Derreberry; MarceUa Sharp, financial secre tary; Wilma Joyce Gray and Ann Pullium, pianists; Ernest Conder, minister of music; Truett West, Tommy Battle, Walter Jones, Jer ry Cox, Richard Pullium, Tony Cox and Jack McGuire will serve as ushers. Dorcas McGuire Honored With Bridal Shower Miss Dorcas Ann McGuire, bride elect of J- Broods was honored with a miscellaneous shower Sat urday ev^nins, May 18 at 7:30 at the home of Mrs. James Stewart. Associate hostesses were: Mrs. L. B. Womack, Mrs. Helen Waldroup, Mrs. J. E. Rufty, Miss Ruth Ham ilton, Mrs. Hpward Ford and Mrs. Louise Zimmerman. Attractive arrangements of pink roses and white deutzia were used in the rooms. The centerpiece on the table consisted <jf an arrange ment of pink roses flanked by sil ver candelabra with pink tapers. A minature green ?ttk parasol was placed at one end. * The pink, green and white motii was furthered in the refreshments of ice cream, petit fours, punch and nuts. Olson were hon ored, Sunday evening May 19, b> the Murphy School faculty follow ing the dedication of the new Mur phy High School building. Miss Emily Sword presided and Mrs. J. W. Davidson gave the wel come. Speakers were Walter Puett and John Jordan for the faculty and Peyton G. I vie for the school board. They ecpressed great es teem for the Buecks and their ser vice to the school and community during the 25 years they have been in Murphy and to the Olsons for their eight years here. A pair of five branched silver candlelabra was presented the Buecks with Miss Leila Hayes mak ing the presentation. Mrs. Dair Shields presented the faculty's gift of a silver tray to the Olsons.
