Alton Morris of Murphy, was among the twenty-three North Caro linians receiving undergraduate degrees recently at Furftan University in Greenville, South Carolina. Irene Warner Honored 0 n 8th Birthday Irene Warner was honored on her eighth birthday, Saturday June 1, by her mother and grandmoth er, Mrs. Ben Warner Jr. and Mrs Ben Warner, Sr. Miss Wanda West and Ressie Al len were in charge of games. Those who won prizes were Sarah Jane Hill, and Joanthan Maxwell. Gee Miss Sarah Louise Barnett of Jefferson, Georgia and Mr. Thom as Kennedy Gee, alio of Jeffersor were married Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock in a ceremony perform ed in the Presbyterian Church, Jefferson. The bride is the daughter of Mr. Henry Polk Harnett of Jefferson, and the late Mrs. Barnett. Mr. Gee is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Narville Gee, Jefferson, Ga. Those attending the wedding from Murphy were Mrs. John Donley, Mrs. Verlin Crisp, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Raxter, Doris Hen-? drix and Frances Sue Ferguson. Mrs. Gee is a niece of Mrs. Don ley and Mrs. Crisp. A graduate of Berry College, she will be teaching in the Jeffer son, Georgia school this fall. Ferguson Honored With Going Away Party Miss Lila Marr Ferguson, 1956 graduate of Andrews High School left Sunday for Swanannoa where she will enter Warren Wilson Col lege. For the past year Miss Ferguson has been employed at Berkshire Knitting Mills. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ferguson of Aquone and Andrews. Miss Ferguson was honored with ( a miscelleanous shower and going away party Friday in the cafeteria ( of the Berkshire Knitting Mills by the employees and invited guests. ? She received a large number of gifts including luggage. , Mrs. D. L. Wells of Wallace vis ited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Townson last week. ROBERT NELSON Robert Nelson Receives, Scholarship Robert Nelson (Bob), 1957'grad uate of Andrews High School has received a scholarship to North Carolina State College, Raleigh. The Grant-In-Aid scholarship for two hundred dollars was based or competitive examinations and tests made in Murphy, AshevUlc and Raleigh for scholastic record and need. i Bob has assumed his summer work at Andrews Builders Supply and plans to enter State College in September. He plans to major in textile chemistry. He is making his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Bessie Nelson, in Andrews. R. G. Alexanders Entertain Saturday At Duke's Lodge Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Alexander entertained six couples at a dinner party at Duke's Lodge last Satur day night, honoring their guest, Perry Howard, Jr. and his bride elect Miss Carolyn Alexander. Mr. Merie Davis Delegate To Methodist Meet The annual meeting of the West era North Carolina Conference oi the Methodist Church will convene at Lake Junaluska on Friday morp ing. The conference will continue until Monday at noon. In attendance will be more than 1000 ministers and Lay represen tatives of the churches in Western North Carolina. Mr. Merle Davis will be the delegate from the Mur phy First Methodist Church: Mrs. H. G. Elkins is the reserve dele gate. There will be regular morning services this Sunday at the Meth odist Church. The Reverend Del bert Byrum of Nashville, Tennes see, will be the preacher. Mr. Byrum was a former pastor of the Murphy Church, leaving the pastorate four years ago to become a member of the General Board oi Education of the Church in the field of Youth work and training schools. Mrs. Byrum and their year-old baby girl, Adel, will be visiting in the home of Dr. and Mrs. George Dyer over the week end.
