SPECIAL
CROSS
C o it act
providing an ideal recreation facil
ity for both the young and old of
Murphy, it will be an added attrac
tion for the many tourists visiting
here.
Motels, hotels, tourist homes and
other business establishments may
well capitalize on this new facil
ity by informing tourists of its
presence and inviting them to
spend several restful days in
scenic Murphy. The pool is open
at night.
A wonderful job of collecting ap
proximately $22,500 has been ac
complished by those who spear
headed the project but the camp
aign is still shy around $4,000.
Outstanding pledges total about
$1,600 and officials hope these will
be fulfilled shortly.
One official has cited the urgen
cy of pledges being fulfilled imme
diately pointing out that two mem
bers of the swimming pool com
mittee signed a personal note for
$2,400 to secure funds for the pro
ject.
The project got its start last
November in the Lions Club, then
snowballed to other civic and soc
ial organizations. The town of Mur
phy is behind the program 100 per
cent.
The Junior Woman's Club, the
Civitan and Kiwanis clubs, the
Cherokee County Fair Association,
Cherokee Rose Garden Club, Mur
phy Garden Club and others have
all pitched in to help. Donations
have been received from more
than 500 individuals and organiza
tions. Atty. Hobart L. McKeever
has played a big part in making
the project a success.
Although the pool is now in use,
several small "finishing up" jobs
must be completed. Officials do not
expect to have a formal opening
because of the lateness of the sea
son.
The new pool will open with ap
propriate ceremonies next spring.
ON OUR STREET

People in other countries tan
know how deeply religious we m,
what a God-tearing nation we are,
a. ml thaTso many things that we oo
are motivated by oar belief in God.
The people in other countries
think that we are
superficial; that
we don t care
what happens to
the rest of the
world. This is in
spite of the fact
that no group of
people, since the
d a w n of man
kind, hai ever worried as much a
bout the rest at the world and hu
manity as we are doing it with
words and action, day in and day
out.
We not only have worried about
the rest of mankind with words
and action ? we even worry to the
tune of giving away to the rest of
the world in the last 12 years, in
the form of gifts, 50 billion dollars.
This is $1,000 for every household
id our country.
One of the reasons why the rest
of the world has the wrong impres
sion about us is that, even though
we make tremendous efforts, our
efforts are not coordinated in such
a way that these efforts really do
the most good for the greatest
number of people all over the
world. /
Whether we like it or not, one of
these days we have to make up our
minds to fight for peace the way
we fight a war. One of these days
we the greatest advertisers, the
most capable merchandisers the
world has ever seen, have to "sell"
Americanism to the rest of the
world.
We have people in our country
who sell us on using toothpaste,
whether we like it or not. They sell
us on the idea that soap is 99
9/10% pure. We have people who,
without much effort, could sell you
and me a lot in the Atlantic Ocean,
and a refrigerator to an Eskimo.
We certainly have the brains and
heart to sell the rest of the world
on what Americansim is, and that
for people in other parts of the
world it is far better to follow our
American gospel than any other
example. - ,
We are the only strong and
great nation since the dawn of
history that has never been inter
ested, nor made any effort, to
annex, acquire or invade any other
country. We are perfectly happy
with what we have. We don't want
any more land, and we don't want
any of the raw products from other
countries without pdying for them.
We are not only happy with the
size and shape of our U. S. A., we
are even happy with the size and
shape of most of its inhabitants.
THE MOUNTAINS
By Mrs. Nora Cobb Spencer
The Mountains have beauty to
share,
The magic of colors, resplendant
art,
Clothes the soul in grateful praise,
Peace rests in the chapel of the
heart.
The majestic pines that climb the
steeps,
Dressed in everlasting green that
sooths the eyes;
The mighty oaks that crown the
peaks,
With heads that look into the sky.
The Revulets that leap down the
hills
Chattering and giggling as they go,
To reach the plains and turn the
mills
That furnish flour white as snow.
Our great Smokies how sublime
Where the Indians love to roam,
And the smoke of the wigwags curl
in rhyme
As the hunter hurries borne.
We look to the mountains for help
divine
The Master sought them to be
apart
Holy thoughts in them we find
That soothe the restless weary
heart.

W ORDS OF LItE
Marpfcy, K. C.
How sad k ia that many man
who stand behind tba Sacred daak
believe and teach that the Bible
is a book of Jewish fables and is
to be" tonaldsnd nothing more
than an accurate account of his
tory.
Certainly, there are places in the
King James and other versions
that disagree but remember that
our Bible was down for
many years on band written scrolls
and if there are mistakes, that is
where they enter into the picture.
As originally written, the Bible
is entirely without mistake, and
every word which was written was
directly inspired by God. We must
take this stand in view of what is
written in n Tim. 3:16, wfaich says
"AD Scripture is given by inspir
ation of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correct
ion, for instruction in righteous
ness." Here, we have a simple out
line on how to use the Holy Scrip
tures.
1. For doctrine or teaching:
There are many things which can
be taught from this book, but here
we will only state a few, such as
how to be successful, happy, how
to raise children, what to do when
faced with different problems,
how we should behave in any situ
ation, and many more, but most
important of all, it teaches the way
of Salvation.
H. For Reproof: It is impossible
for saint or sinner to read the
word of God and not be convicted
of either sin of shortcoming. A
young man once received a New
Testament as a birthday gift from
his mother. Out of respect for her,
he attempted to read it through
but was continually brought face to
face with the sinfulness of his life.
This was one of the things that
worked togUUr to bring about
bis conversion to Jeous Christ.
ID. For correction: IV Script
uros km sometimes boon rotar
od to as Christian's guido book.
Whenever ho is in -doubt about any
phase of his life, ho can usually
find the answer to his situation
there. Since the Bible is the meas
uring stick by which we determine
what is right or wrong, it is not
only good for keeping oneself
straight, but by teaching it's con
tents, we are also able to help
others find what is right for them.
IV. For instruction in righteous
ness: When s person becomes lost
in a wilderness, without compass,
map, or any sort of aid, be will
naturally tend to follow the easiest
paths. So it is with those \yr ho are
lost in sin. They will go on and on,
down the wide open way to de
struction, and Just as a sheet of
instructions, would help the lost
wayfarer find his way home, the
word of God opens an avenue of
escape of the sin cursed men and
women of this world.
All that we have said here, how
ever, is not complete without tak
ing into consideration verse 17
which ssys "That the man of God
may be perfect, throughly furnish
ed unto all good works." The word
perfect conveys the idea of being
complete," with nothing lacking.
No matter bow far we may pro
gress in knowledge and grace, as
far as our human mind and abili
ties are concerned, we are in
finite, or incomplete. This incom
pleteness is the very reason we
should rely absolutely on the Word
of God as our final authority.
Since every word of the Bible
comes directly from God, and since
He is infinite, we can rest assured
that in using this Book, we are us
ing something that cannot fail.
In other words, the man of God
who uses the Scripture aright is
