QUE8T10NS,AN ANSWERS ON NICKELS FOB KNOW-HOW THE PLAN Q. What is the "Nickels for Know-How" proposal? A. It is a plan to continue to expand agricultural research and education in North Carolina through a farmer contribution of five cents per ton on all feed and fertilizer sold in the state. M Q. Why a special contribution? Why don't we pay for more re search out of our regular tax mon ey? A. North Carolina has such a diversified agriculture ? such a varied climate, so many different crops, insects, diseases and weed problems that even the generous appropriations passed by the re cent sessions of the General As sembly fall short of needs. Q. Doesn't this special contri bution tend to reduce Federal and State appropriations for recearch? A. Nb. In fact, private contri butions tend to increase appro priations. Past experience shows that a state legislature feels ftore like helping a group which is al ready helping itself. THE VOTE Q. When will the referendum be held? A. On August 23, 1957. Polling hours will be set by each county and will be announced by newspap ers, farm magazines, television and radio. Q. Where will the voting be con ducted? A. In most communities, the voting place will be the same as that used as ASC elections, plus others the County Nickels for Know-How Committee will add. Poll locations will be announced locally and advertised with- posters. Q. Must I vote in my own town ship? A. No. You may vote wherever it is most convenient for you to vote. However, you will be asked to sign an election roster where - ever you vote so as to avoid dupli cate ballots. Q. Do I have to register es pecially for this referendum? A. No. Q. Who is eligible to vote? A. As in the past two votings in 1951 and 1954, all persons who use feed or fertilizer and their wives or husbands are eligible. Four-H Club, FFA, FHA, and NFA mem bers with crop or livestock pro jects and who use feed or fertilizer are also eligible. Q. It muat be approved by two thirda of thoae voting. In the laat referendum in 1954, North Caro lina farmers gave thia plan a 10 to 1 vote of approval. THE OUTCOME Q. la the amount deducted a nickel per tod? A. It'a a nickel per ton. That figurea out to be only about a fourth of a penny per 100-pound bag. Q. Where are the nickels col lected? A. At the manufacturers. The five cents ia included in the price of the feed and fertilizer as it is sold to the retailer and finally to the farm er. Q. Then I am not bothered with paying an extra nickel or penny every time I buy some feed or fer tilizer? A. No. The contribution will il ready have been paid and the price of the feed and fertilizer raised ac cordingly. During the past six years the Nickels for Know-How program has been in force, the plan has worked very smoothly. Q. I have heard thjs nickel per ton referred to as a tax. Is it? A.' No. It is a contribution be cause you can get it refunded if you wish. Q. Hoow much does it cost me? A. It costs the average farmer 30 cents per year. Only the largest farmers will contribute more than a dollar per year. > Q. Who collects the money? A. The North Carolina Depart ment of Agriculture collects the money free of charge along with inspection fees. The money is then turned over to the Agricultural Foundation at State College. Q. What determines how this money is spent? A. The Board of Directors of the Agricultural Foundation which is composed of 100 of the State's out standing farmers and leaders. Each county in the state has one 'director on this Agricultural Foun dation Board. . ' : ' - ? Says . . . Cheesecake is tasty, wholesome, and easy to make. And when it takes no baking, you can't beat it as a desert for these hot August days. To make delightfully differ ent treat, you'll need 2 envelopes glelatine; 1 cup sugar; Vi teaspoon salt; 2 egg yolks; beaten; X cup milk; 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 3 cups creamed cottage cheese (24 ounces); sieved; 1 tablespoon lem on juice; 1 teaspoon vanilla; 2 tablespoons melted butter; 1 table spoon sugar; Vi cup graham crack er crumbs; teaspoon cinnamon; "A teaspoon tnutmeg; 2 egg whites, stiffly beaten; and 1 cup heavy cream, whipped. Mix gelatine, sugar, and salt in saucepan. Beat egg yolks, mix with cup of milk, and add to gelatine mixture. Cook on very low heat, stirring constantly till gelatine dis solves and mixture thickens (about 10 minutes). Remove from heat and add lem on rind. Cool. Stir in sieved, creamed cheese, lemon juice, and vanilla. Chill, stirring occasionally till mixture mounds slightly when dropped from a spoon. While mixture is chilling, make crumb topping by mixing the two tablespoons melted butter, one tablespoon sugar, half cup graham cracker crumbs, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside. Fold egg whites and whipped cream into chilled gelatine mix ture. Turn into 8-inch spring form pin, and sprinkle top with crumb mixture. Chill till firm. Yield, 10 to 12 servings. Note: This cheese cake may be. frozen and kept from one to two months. The small amount of time and effort to take a soil sample may save hundreds of dollars in lime and fertiliser as well as in crop aUla jrMflQS.
