THIS IS MY BELOVED SON: HEAK YE HIM Luke *: 28-36 At this time Jesus took Peter, James and John, His beloved dis ciples and went up into a high mountain- There He was transfig ured before them- Jesus knew there would be many who would not believe that He was the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, so He wished to have eye witnesses who could declare it He did not wish a multitude to see it or even the twelve disciples. He just chose the three most beloved ones. Dur ing the transfiguration, Moses and Elias appeared and talked with Him. This experience held three un forgetable phases for the disciples. They were: the vision, the veil, and the voice. The vision unveiled to them the glorious divine nature of Christ shining through His flesh and garments as though they had been designed to be but a reflect ing medium for that inner glory. But the vision was brief. It was followed by a cloud which settled in on them and shut out His pres ence as effectively as though it had been a veil- Then came the voice out of the cloud, and it was the voice of God, who, now as of old, spoke in the cloudy pillar (Psalms 9:7). There was no thunder, light ning, or sound of a trumpet as there was when the law was given to Moses. Only a voice? a still small voice. The testimony from heaven was. 'This is my beloved Son, hear ye Him." This was the same proclamation that came from heaven at His baptism and it was the best news that ever came from heaven to earth. Moses and Elias were great men, yet they were but servants, and servants that God was not always well pleased in. Moses spoke un advisedly, and Elias was a man subject to passions. But Christ is a Son, and in Him God was always well pleased. God is pleased with none but those who hear Him. It is not enough to give Him the hearing only but we must hear Him and believe Him as the great Prophet and Teacher; hear Him and be ruled by Him as the Great Prince and Law-giver. Yes, we should 1 hear Him and heed Him in every thing. Whoever would know the mind of God must, of necessity, hearken to Jesus Christ, for by Him God has spoken to us in these last days- . . Hear ye Him!" Pvt. Otis Kephart Graduates From Automotive School Pvt. Otis H. Mt- 13, 31 Halloween or Hallows' Eve? Like all our traditional celebra tions, Halloween has its origin in the past. In the early days, Chris tians were accustomed to solem nize the anniversary of a martyr's death at the place of martyrdom Gradually neighboring churches began to interchange feasts and join in common banquets, especial ly after the persecution of Diocle tian (for 10 years, c 302-312 AD) when the number of martyrs came to be so great that separate days could not be assigned for each Therefore, the Church, feeling that every martyr should be honored, (since in dying for Christ, they be came His special friends, saints, as He promised: "He that shall con fess me before men, I will also confess him before my Father in Heaven" Mt. 10, 32), appointed a common feast day for all saints, known and unknown. This day was soon called All Saints' Day, and was eventually fixed for November 1st, as it is today. Now the word "hallows" in old English is equivalent to our word "saints"; so the eve of November 1st was spoken of as the "Eve of all Hallows" or "All Hallows' Eve", and soon just Halloween". Why did they even speak of the eve of the feast? Because in the first ages, it was customary to keep a vigil the night before every feast. In the evening the faithful would gather in the church where the feast was to be celebrated, and prepared themslves by prayers, readings from Scripture, a sermon and finally sacrifice- Towards morning, they visited nearby homes; and while waiting for the solem forenoon services, they be gan to celebrate. On All Hallows' Eve, they rejoic ed with the saints over their re ward in heaven; and with celebra tion came jokes and dances. The pumpkin, candle, witch, bat and cat took on new meaning. The pumpkin became the earth on which we work out our salvation. The candle represents Jesus, the Light of the world, whom we must imitate as did the saints. The witch, black cat and bat symbolize the devil, going about the earth seeking whom he may devour. (1 Pet- 5, 8)- As long as we remain close to the Light, "in the world but not of the world", the devil and his helpers cannot harm us. RESOLUTION: Let us make this Halloween, not a night of sin or destruction, but a Hallowed Eve, with special prayers in honor of all His Saints, and especially the saint whose name I bear, begging help to also become a great saint quick ly "Teach me to do Thy Will, for Thou art my God" (Ps. 142, 10) QUESTION: Are. there any pine seedlings left in the State Forest Nurseries for farmers to order? ANSWER: Yet. If you want 25, 000 or less will get your order In by October 15, you are almost sure to have it fined. Rollman's Views Editor's Note? This is the twenty fifth in a scries of articles by Heins {tollman, Industrialist, Wayaesville, N. C. Suppose we would read In our local papers today that the level of our water sheds has fallen be low a safe point- In other words. that there Is dan ger; that we will] not have enough water available in the next few weeks. What would we doT We would either conserve w a t p r nr va would make frantic arrangements for the future that such a calam ity would not befall us anymore Right now. we woulld just take emergency measures ? stop wash ing cars; stop sprinkling the lawn and just use enough water to give the children a bath ( who don't want a bath anway) and wash the dishes - It is just as simple as that, that something should be done by posi tive thinking for our future. Act ually, however, It doesn't when we read about a water shortage in another state, far away from our home. We say, "Well, that is too bad- These people really have to be carefully now what they do with water, but they will have to figure out fast means to take care of that situation." When we read that a flood in China has killed a million people within 24 hours (and, mind you, this has happened), we say "Well, these people really have tough luck." But when it comes to a tor rential rain right in our own home town, and one little bridge is swept away, and one dog drowns, then that is really real news. It has to be that way, for anything that is close to home has to be more im portant news than things which are years or thousands of miles away. But, and here comes the rub, there is not a thing anymore years away from any human being, and there is nothing anymore weeks or month* or mo days away from anyone, for today Russia can de liver an atomic bomb from Moa cow to Charlotte, N. C- faster than one could travel by stage coach from Washington to New York not so very long ago. I am all in favor, and I am per sonally much more interested in the hometown news, but the fact remains, hometown U- S. A. today is really every hamlet, village and town anywhere in the world I sometimes get terribly tired of having to think of so many com plicated things that happened all over the world. It is so easy, and I remember so well when I was a young boy, I lived on a farm and important world news was when the cow got a heifer, the sow a lit ter or the dog puppies. Travelling was a real trip to sit on the hay wagon. When I was a young boy, I don't think one person out of a million had ever heard the word "communism", and it has become such a stupendous over-whelming, a horrible danger to Christianity and our whole civilization that the human mind just simply doesn't want to absorb or understand its full disasterous meaning and sig nifiance It requires a fight of such pro portion, more phychologically than with arms, that all of us just simply shy away from the problem as much as we possiDly can.
