There is also the consolation that comes through losing: the Bulldogs get to play Andrews Wildcats again, the two teams meeting this Friday night at 8 on the Murphy field. The game, played before more than 3,000 fans, including not a few Murphyites who had come expect ing to see their team win, was marked by spectacular plays. Of fenses of both teams in the first quarter were thwarted. Canton's opening assault high-lighted by Pace pa?ing to Clark for a first down on Murphy's 45, played om when Birchfield intercepted a pass deep in Murphy territory. | He Bulldogs quarter returned the interception to the 13, John Morris went around end for 15 yards, Hill smashed fbr 6, Birch , neld took 2 more, and John Mor ra despite an official being in his way? circled right end for an other first down Another was made when Birch field tossed a jump pass to Jim Hendrix an Canton's 35. Hill and Bobby Morris made further gains With first down on Canton's 25. But a penalty against the Bulldogs a poor pitchout to J. Morris ,and a | pass over the head of the intend ed receiver gave the Black Bears the ball. Mike Clark, in a scintillating broken field run, got away for 40 1 yards to Murphy's 34; and with Don and Tom Price, carried on to the Bulldogs' 23 at the end of the quarter. Clark shuttled his way to the five at the start of the second period, and smashed over center for the Bears' first count. Charlie Duke kicked the extra point ,the prst of four he made during the mght. After the next kick-off Murphy was forced to punt, and the Canton ese, putting the ball in play from their 40, went all the way unhalt ed, Clark, Doug, Tom and Don Pr ce and Pace all having part in the drive. Clark struck through center for 14 yards for the touch down, and when Duke made the ex tra, the score was 14 to 0. Murphy was unable to gain and punted to the Bears just about the end of the naif. In the third period, however, the Bulldogs came jilive. Burchfield returned the kick to his 32; and the Bulldogs from that point surg ed 68 yards to score. But Pace plotted it otherwise, and passed to his right end Wilson, who raced away for 42 yards into Mur phy territory. That left the roof sagging; and when Clark broke over right guard 34 yards to score, it fell in The Red and Black team of Can ton took over again after Murphy 1 received the kick, when Tom Price intercepted a pass on the Bulldog's 35. A end-over-end play with Wheeler carrying, and getting a key block put the ball on Mur phy's 8. Lovingood held Don Price to a two yard gain; but at the be ginning of the last quarter .after the Bears had sustained a 5-yard penalty, Clark slashed through the line for 11 yards and the score Another intercepted pass which Clark took to Murphy's 28 account ed for the Cantonese' final tally. Don and Tom Price each made i gains; and then Clark in two tries, nailed the counter, with Duke boot ing the final point. Murphy still had some fire though; and after Clark fumbled on his 43 later in the period, took over and went all the way. Birch field, who was being afforded poor blocking and thus getting away his passes with difficulty, broke through for 24 yards and a first down on the Bear's 16. Bobby Mor ris made 7 yards, and Birchfie)! plunged to Canton's 5 for a first down. Buck Hill went to the 1 foot line and then carried over. It was a fine display on the part of the Bulldogs? worn and soundly beat ten? but still able to muster scor ing punch- Soon after the game ended. * s.'f.y j NOTICES NOTICE IN THE SUPERIOR COVET NORTH CAROLINA CHEROKEE COUNTY JOHN Q.
