Forestry Thinning Demonstration
There will be a forestry thinning
demonstration on Mr. Charlie
Clont'i farm on Thursday Novem
ber 21, starting at 1:00 p. m. Mr.
Fred Whltefield. Extension Fores
try Specialist of N. C- State Col
lege, Raleigh will be on hand to
assist with this demonstration. Mr.
Cloot's farm is located on highway
No- 2M the first house on the right
after you turn off of No. 64 going
toward Hiwassee Dam. The demon
stration will be held right back of
the house in view of the highway.
Any person in Cherokee County
that is interested in better Forestry
management practices is invited
to attend this meeting.
Have Your Soil Tested Now

gest that farmers have their soils
tested now. The principal reason
for having it tested is to determine
the lime and fertility level of your
various fields. If you know this,
you can then purchase your lime
and fertilizer in keeping with these
needs, thereby increasing the re
turn you can expect to get from
the money invested in these two
items. This in turn means a great
er net farm income.
In these times of an increasing
cost-price squeeze, Mr. Nave con
tinues, one important way of main
taining, if not actually increasing,
net farm income is by decreasing
productive costs. Purchasing what
you actually need in the way of
lime and fertilizer instead of buy
ing these items by guess work a
lone is one important way to cut
down on costs- By having your soils
tested, you can determine which
fields need lime and fertilizer and
which ones don't This is double
barreled economy, for you don't
spend money where its not needed
and at the same time you find out
those areas on your farm where a
failure to spend money for lime
and fertilizer will mean a los|i to
you.
Soil testing is the first step in %

Nave continues, and be urges
growers to get their soil sample in

processing samples in a week to
ten days and With this fast service,
growers are assured of having
their report back in ample time to
make needed purchase of the lime
and fertilizer suggested.
The information sheets, boxes
and cartons can be obtained from
the county agent's office or from
any of the other agricultural work
ers in the county.

Returns To
San Diego
Buddie J. Powers, USN, son of
Mr- and Mrs- Henry Braswell of
Murphy, returned to San Diego,
Calif-, Nov- 8 aboard the high
speed transport USS Weiss after
six weeks in Alaskan waters.
The Weiss joined other amphi
bious vessels in the cold weather
area and participated in "Opera
tion Cool Dip", a reconnaissance
exercises, involving Marine "rec
on" teams and frogmen.
