MAKSHALL, JR., Assistant County Farm Agent JUNIOR CAMP June 16 was a big day in the life'a of twenty nine Cherokee County 4-H'ers as they left for Schaub near Waynes ville, N. C Camp was a complete new exper ience for some of the campers and also it was the first time for a few to be away from their par ents. The 4-H'ers will have classes in recreation, handicraft, swimming, wildlife and electricity. The club members to attend camp are as follows: Kaylene Ab ernathy, Mike Abernathy, Joan Lee Crisp, Shelia Sneed, Kenny Jane Davis, Shirley Jones, Char les Henson, Clara Jane Ferguson, Ginger Mauney, Billy Moore, Jerry Brendle, J. R- Verner Jr., Patsy Hamby, Ernest Boring, Patricia Baine, Billy Gulledge, Maxine O' Dell, Elizabeth Hawkins, Merle McRae, Carmolita Smith, Audrey Smith, Johnny Sandridge, Jerald Bryson, Gary Breedlove, Janet Burnett, Scotty Calhoun, Barbara Watry, David Slagle, and Donna Fuller. L- B. Marshall, assistant county agent, Miss Mary Hensley, assistant home agent and Miss Maude E. Collins, adult teacher, will accompany the group to Camp Schaub Our hope is that all our 4-H'ers will grow in leadership abilities and some home to do a better job in their 4-H work. PROFITABLE PIGS "There is pleasure and profit in registered Yorkshires." That was the decision of the new Chero kee County Pig Chain members as they talked with Jerry Henson a 4-H'ers who is also a veteran Yorkshire producer. Cherokee County 4-H'ers who are new chain members this year are : Linda and Kenneth Henson, Charles McAfee, Dewey Anderson, Charles Henson, and Carolyn Dockery. Jerry Henson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Henson, Murphy Route 4, was a new pig chain member! last year, but this year he feels' QUESTION: How can I protect my timber from fires? ANSWER: One way to protect your forest is by plowing firelaoes around the area and being very careful with brush and grass burn ing. Also urge your neighbors to be careful with their fires. Fin ally, cooperate with the State For est Service by helping detect and stop forest fires. like a veteran after raising twelve out of twelve pigs farrowed by his Yorkshire gilt and selling them for a nice price of $245.00 at 8-9 weeks old. The pigs for this years pig chain were furnished by Jerry and he was quite proud of his accom plishment- Jerry had to buy most of his feed but with a real good pasture he kept his profit up to $135.00 not figuring the cost of the gilt which he received last year. Actually there was not much cost originally for his gilt because he received $22. 00 prize money at the Cherokee County Fair where the gilt placed in the blue ribbon a ward group. Jerry's brother, diaries has purchased one of the gilts from this years first litter and the two plan to go into the registered York shire production in a big way.
