MUSTARD SEEDS

PISHING
In one of the battles of the Civil
War, when his army was suffering
s severe defeat. General Lee rode
over a section of the battlefield
where the fighting had passed on.
As he did so, a wounded Northern
soldier in the spirit of defiance,
lifted his head and ahouted, "Hur
rah for the Union!" The soldier
then expected to be shot; but in
stead Lee dismounted and said sim
ply, "I'm sorry that you are ao
gravely wounded. I hope you may
soon be well." Afterward the sol
dier said, "That spirit broke my
heart and I cried myself to sleep."
Often others are hateful to us
only because they expect unkind
ness and are anticipating it. When
they receive instead a word or ges
ture of friendship, they are defen
seless and quickly ready to return
the kindness they are given. Just as
hatred breeds hatred, so love
creates love. |
Christ, too, 1 s fighting a war. The
last Berea College religious cen
sus reported that 60 per cent of
mountain people claim no church
membership. Now Jesus asks every
Christian to join the Apostles and
be "fishers of men" (Mt. 4, 19).
But one reason why many of the 60
per cent do not join His Church is
because they do not see Christ and
His love in these fishermen, nor the
attitude of Lee; but only the hate
of that soldier.
Moreover, members of other
churches are often greeted as the
soldier greeted Lee; or even worse,
as a woman who criticized Lincoln
for speaking kindly about the Con
federates. "Your job is to destroy
them; not be kind to your ene
mies!" "But, Madam," Lincoln re
plied, "do I not destroy them when
I make them my friends?"
We do not make more friends
partly because without realizing it
we look down on non-Christians as
the Pharisees on Mary Magdalen;
and on Christians as the Samitan
woman did on Jesus, "for the Jews
do not communicate with the Sa
maritans" (John 4, 9) Let us imi
tate Jesus who blessed the Roman
centurion, marvelling at his faith,
(Mt. 8, 10); and converted the wo
man and her "husbands". Jo. 4, 41.
RESOLUTION: Pray and do pen
ance to gain from Jesus the gift of
Faith for those we meet. (Jo. 5, 21;

What size Water Pump do you
need? In determining this need,
it would be well to make a survey
of fann water needs. Listed be
low are the common requirements
for the farm:
Each member
of the family,
TS gallons, per
day; each cow,
30 gallons;
each horse,
mule, or beef
animal, is gal
lons; each hog,
3 gallons; each
sheep, 2 gallons; each loo chick
ens, 3 gallons
Suppose a farm had a family
of 5 persons, 6 cows, 4 mules, 13
hogs, and 100 chickens, its re
quirements would be:
Five persons at 75 gallons, 375;
4 mules at 15 gallons, 60; 6 cows
at 30 gallons, 180; 13 hogs at 3 gal
lons, 39; 100 chickens at 3 gal
lons, all using 675 gallons.
To this should be added two
hours of garden watering or fire
protection, with a Vi inch hose,
at 200 gallons per hour, or a to
tal of 400 gallons. This would give
a total daily consumption of 1057
gallons. The pump selected should
pump this amount in two hours,
so the size selected in this case
should be the 525 gallon per
hour.
QUESTION: How can I protect
my hay crop from the alfalfa wee
vil?
ANSWER: You can control this
pest by using heptachlor, either as
a dust or spray- It takes 10 to 15
pounds of a 2.5 per cent dust or
one pint of a 25 per cent mussifi
able concentrate in water per
acre according to the capacity of
spray equipment used. Heptachlor
may be used up to one week prior
to cutting.

DEFROSTING AND CLEANING
THE HOME FBEEZER
Your home freezer does a fine
job of keeping quality foods bandy
for any occasion with a minimum
of care. But It does need to be
defrosted and cleaned inside oc
casionally (about once a year).
Your first step in this cleanup
is to remove all frozen foods and
wrap them In several thicknesses
of newspapers or store them in
covered cartons. You then take
out removable shelves, baskets,
and racks. This done you're ready
to pull the plug to let the cabinet
warm up.
To hasten the defrosting, you
may scrape as much frost as pos
sible from the freezer interior
with a plastic scraper. You may
also place pans of hot water on
shelves or in the bottom of the
freezer. For even quicker defrost
ing, you can place a portable
household fan to blow air directly
into the freezer.
When you have loosened all
frost, you'll remove it, then wash
the inside of the freezer and all
removable parts with warm soda
water- After a rinse, followed by
thorough drying, you'll reconnect
the freezer to let it get cold.
You're then ready to repack your
frozen foods.
Some food freezers need de
frosting between complete clean
ings- This is particularly so of
the upright type which collects
frost faster than the chest type.
For this in-between defrosting,
hold a tray or cooky sheet tight
against the wall of your freezer
and scrape frost onto it with your
plastic scraper. This scraping can
often be done without removing
foods ? or at most with a little
rearranging of them.
While doing your cleanup is a
good time to lay plans for your
coming freezer load. To do this,
you'll need to analyze your family's
eating habits. For example, if your
family likes peas for dinner once
p. week, it's smart to plan to freeze
enough to include them in your
menus this often.
It's also smart to plan for a turn
over in your supply of frozen foods.
Rapid turnover means improved
quality and economical use of
freezer space.
Another good idea is to lay in a
supply of wrapping materials and
containers after you've planned
your coming freezer program.
You'll know what kinds you'll need
and won't be caught short when
you start filling your freezer.
