M/Y HOfH AMUKmP OH MJTHaS Soil Conservation NEWS By JOHN SMITH The Soils Scientist of the Soil Conservation Service has been in Cherokee County all of last week and most of this week making Land Capability Maps. These maps are the basis for Soil and Water Conservation Farm Plans. Among the farms which have i been mapped are W. E. Moore j and George Mauney of Peachtree, Frank Battle and Berkshire Mills of Andrews. Allan Chambers and j R. W. Martin of Unaka, and' Emery Anderson of Ranger, and Emery Shields of Culberson Frank Ghiringhelli of Basstown showed me some mighty fine young pine growing on his place last week. When timber was cut j off of this land some years ago, shortleaf pine seed trees were left , well spaced throughout the tract. ! As a result, natural seeding has 1 re forested tins land to a good stand of pine. On another tract of I.ud now. owned hut only recently acquired by Mr (il.iringhcHi, no seed trees were left when the timber was cut ten to fifteen years ago. On this tract there has been practic ally no natural re-seeding ot pine. Instead, oaks, maple, sourwood , and other cull and useless trees I have taken (his land. Before a profitable stand of pine can be j gotten on this land by planting, it will be necessary to kill or cut all these cull trees There will be no rash return if trees are killed, j and very little if the trees are cut for pulp It always pays to cut timber selectively. Even when it is neces- . sary to clear-out land due to unus- j ual circumstances, it is essential that a good supply of seed trees be left to rc forest the area natur ally. Any f irmer who plans to cut any wood for pulp or for timber, should procure the services of a I professional forester to help him 1 decide what to cut and what to leave- Federal, State and Com- ! mercial Foresters are available in this area at no cost or very low cost to the farmer. The Wildlife and Resources Commission will again have Bicol or Lespedeza seedlings and Mul tiflora Rose seedling for free dis tribution this year. Any farmer interested in obtaining either of these useful plants can do so by | contacting the/County Game War- [ den, the county agent, or the tech- ! nicians of the Soil Conservation | Service The Supervisors of the Chero kee County Soil Conservation Dis trict have ordered one thousand copies of a pamphlet entitled "The Story of the Land". This comic book type publication on Soil and Water Conservation is to be given to each pupil in the sixth and seventh grades of aU the school in Cherokee County.
