These water re tarding structures are nothing more than ponds which have a large rapacity for the storage of fluod water. Chatuge and Hiwassee dams serve this purpose on a huge scale when they are drawn down in the fall and winter. Such water re tarding structures on a small scale are becofning rather common throughout North Carolina and the rest of the United States. ' Another very important method of preventing floods is called chan nel improvement. This consists of deepening, widening, and straight ening branch and creek channels to allow rapid run-off of heavy rainfall.
