Co-hostess at the meeting was Miss Addle Leaftherwood. Dcring the business session, con ducted by Mrs. Edwards, club pres ident, plans for the flower show division of the Cherokee County Fair was discussed. Miss Emily Sword is general chairman for ? ?hoy. , {WATER SKIING Water skiing is becoming more popular each year. Like most any other sport, it can be hazardous unless safety precautions are exercised. Three | accidents on TV A lakes last year indicates this. A man operating a 14-foot ply wood boat with a 25 horsepower motor, was pulling another man on skis. The boat operator was thrown from the boat when he di i verted his attenlion backward and the boat suddenly swerved. The boat continued to "run away" at full throttle and struck the lock wall and dam. Both men were res cued by nearby boaters, but the! boat was completely demolished and the motor was lost in the lake. In another accident, a man was skiing without a life jacket and he couldn't swim. He fell and sank| before the boat could get back to pick him up. The boat operator dived for him unsuccessfully. The body was recovered in about three' hours. In a third case, a girl was skiing behind a boat operated by her fath er. The father was watching her and failed to see a boat coming at i right angles toward the path of the skier. The woman operating the boat stopped her craft, but her motor swung around and cut a severe gash in the girl's leg. Of a number of safe skiing prac-j tices, three important ones are: I 1. Wear an approved life jacket.! 2. Always have two persons in the boat. 3. Never ski within 100 feet of o dock or other boats. Jack L. Fleming, son of Mr. and ( Mrs. Ben L. Fleming of Murphy, | has been awarded a scholarship by Austin College. Sherman, Texas. It is based on athletic ability. He is entering his second year at Austin College, where lie is a jun-; ior student, and plays center on the football team. MASON JR. 6-2tc Commissioner Large Pitcher Collection Displayed By Miss Palmer Litile pitchers have big ears, as the old saying goes, bet Miss Hattie Palmer has pitchers with small cars and, in fact, all kinds of pitch ers. Miss Palmer began her collection of picthers when she was about j nine years oid. Now the collection ' !?es grown to over 350 pitchers. "I can't place a value on them. They mean a great deal to me," she said. The pitchers are displayed in a large glass case as her home on Valley River Avence. They range in size from a larg pitcher that will ' hold about three quarts dawn to I one smaller 'h#n 4 thimble. She started the collection wltfe % small black womtao. pttfshtr tbal was given to ber by a (riend. The collection has grown through the years by gifts from friends who brought pltohvrs back to Miss Palmer from their travels. "I have them from all over the United States. And J have one from Canada." The case that the pitchers are displayed in seems to hardly have room for another, but Miss Palmer says she is always In the market for new and different pitchers.
