Smith Several fanners have made ap plication for assistance on tile and open ditch drainage to the A SC recently, and one farmer who is going to foot the bill him self has applied directly to the Soil Conservation Service for as sistance with tile drainage on his farm. 1 In the case of those farmers 1 who are requesting assistance from the ASC. the technicians of the Soil Conservation Service must certify that the practice is 1 needed and practical. If it is found that the drainage practice 1 is both needed and practical, the 1 technicians run the necessary en- ; gineering surveys to assure that 1 the completed tile or open ditch I will be dug correctly. After the job is completed in all respects ' the Soil Conservation Service technicians certify that the ditch ing has been done according to ASC specifications. Then and only then is the ASC authorized to make payment to the farmer for 1 the government's share of the cost of completing the job. i A farmer was in the office last week inquiring about getting as- i sistance from the Soil Conserva- ] tion Service on a ditching project I he expects to start soon. He didn't quite understand how we could help him in digging a ditch. He 1 said he could dig the ditch by him- ] self just as well as he could with our help. When I explained to him I the method we use to assure a uniform grade on the ditch bot tom. he decided that we could help him after all and he request ed that we come to his farm and survey the ditch for him. It is a quite simple matter to make water run down hill with- ' out the use of special surveying instruments, but getting a uniform grade on the ditch bottom with out surveying instruments is practically impossible. When the grade is not uniform, the tile which is laid in the ditch does not do as good a job as it should, because only part of its capacity is being used. It costs the farmer nothing to get the services of the Soil Conservation technicians, so it is to his advantage to call on us for assistance. W. FAISON BARNES Substitute Trustee GARDEN TINE By M. E. Gardner If the weather has been as good in your neighborhood as it has in our s for the past week you surely must be getting the urge to enjoy growing things a gain. We can expect more bad weather but this should not pre vent careful planning for spring work in the vegetable garden and getting some chores behind us which can be dooe now. Why have a garden? The plan ning and management of a gar den provides a wealth of indi vidual experience, learning and appreciation. A small plot can be as effective as a large farm gar den in unfurling the mysteries of the soil and providing the thrill of accomplishment. You will us ually eat more vegetables if you grow your own. They will be gar den fresh and you can fill the home freezer for year-around en joyment. You can save money, too. if you do a good job. Where should the garden be located? On the best soil you have available. The soil can always be improved by using organic ma terials, stable or chicken manure, compose or well-rotted sawdust Manure is best and now is a good time to apply it and plow under. Stable manure should be 'used at the rate of about 15 bushels per 1.000 square feet. If poultry manure is used, apply about one third as much. In either case, supplement the treatments: by broadcasting 25 pounds of phos phoric acid i super-phosphate i per 1,000 square feet. If well-decom posed sawdust is used, broadcast 15 bushels per 1,000 square feet and supplement with 30 pounds i broadcast i of an 8-8-8 fertilizer before plowing under. Have your soil tested and ad just the pH to 6.0 by applying Dolomotic limestone, if necessary. The soil test will also give other information which will assist in properly feeding your growing plants. The garden should be accessible to the house and close enough to a good water supply for irrigation. Vegetables like full sun. For this reason do not select a garden site too close to trees and large shrubs. Aside from the undersirability of shade, the vegetable plants are put in competition with tree roots for moisture and nutrients.
