It ta best when they ail happen to fe'her Tourists can bring in the money from all >ver the country and leave it in a 'egion while va cationing: very healthy farming that employs a great deal of la bor at high wages: and industry ?these are the three ' mosts" of jirosperity As for tourist. fe? parts of our nation are more blessed than W N. C. It has wonderful scenery and climate and is creating better tourist facilities and recreation all the time. As for farming, the same reason that makes our re gion so outstanding for tourist and \acationing. makes it lea suitable for high income frrming. As to industry, we have to overcome, through every possible effort, the old fashioned and completely wrong notion that the mountains don't lend themselves as suitably to industrial enterprises as flat land. Industry can certainly thrive in our region. The proof is in ex isting industries that offer a won derful employment and usually ex cellent wages, to a large number of people. Some people think that the established industries don't, like the idea cf more industry romiug to our r'gion, but noth ing could be further from the. Lruth or from the facts. Industry usually thrives best when not completely alone, so here apain is the proof in the eating of the pudding if you look at the mam moth corporations in New York ?r Detroit or Chicago or other; industrial centers surrounded by] h.indreds upon hundreds of other industries. Our manufacturers and our in- ( dustries in the mountain region without a lot of fanfare and drum beating, have done and are doing a great deal in their own way to help attract more industry here. It is not so much the point that they need it for their benefit.! since they actually don't, but it I is for then a question of civic j pride and being a good citizens! in wanting to do the most for the region where they thrive. We can never hope to raise: our level of prosperity by becom ing a center of banking, financ-] ing, or commerce such as New York or San Francisco. Our nat ural location just doesn't lend it self for that. We cannot hope to become overnight a conventior mecca such as New York, Chi cago, St. Louis, or Miami. Only vast cities have the facilities to attract conventions. But we can, as a region together, certainty do an rwful lot to attract more in dustry. We know that anything that is good for any part of our region is good for the whole re gion. And as a region we could also think to make W. N. C. "Con vention Paradise U.S.A." We've got the climate, we've got the | triendiiest people in the world to; make convention people feel at; Home and all of us together one day may each subscribe to a lit tle bit "of stock to build some there in our mountains one of the most beautiful convention cen ters in the U.S. A convention cen ter that has hotels and motels, shops, and all other facilities and who knows, one of these days on one of our wonderful summits there may be a summit meeting to bring humanity a lot closer to peace I believe that our nat I ural environment and wonderful help any group of people in find ing better solutions when they meet. ? ' 1 Honesty begins at home in the 12th, and the people have a right to know that every advertisement and every column signed by me has been my idea, developed by me worked oat by me and writ ten by me. This statement I make under oath. I believe the people have the right to know what the candidate thinks and feels, and that the people are not interested In what an advertising agenry would work out or what a pro fessional writer would put into a column.
