Parent Benefits

Field Representative
A dependent parent may be en
titled to monthly payments under
the Social Security Act if certain
qualifying conditions are met.
These benefits may be paid in
addition to any paid the surviving
widow and children.
First, the son <or daughter1 on
whose record the parent is claim
ing benefits must have died fully
insured. In addition, the deceased
must have furnished at least one
half the parent's total support in
the 12-month period just before
death
This support requirement,
simply stated, means that the
parent must have received as
much support from the deceased
as he received from all other
sources combined. All other
sources of income to the parent
must be considered in arriving at
the support requirement. This
may include self-employment in
come of the parent, dages. rents,
and payments received from other
government agencies. A claim and
proof of dependency must be fil
ed within two years after the
age earner's dead).
If the parent has reached re
tirement age <8S for men. 62

also be needed. If the parent
has not reached retirement age.
