By PHIL MATTOX Boys state ia sponsored by the ' | American Legion with the co operation of the Institute of Gov-; eminent of North Carolina. It is| held annually at the University of North Carolina at Cabpel Holl This was the twentieth session of Boys State. Upon registering, each dele gate was assigned to a political party, a city, and a county. We| were also organised into recrea tional groups for soft-ball and basketball. There was table ten nb, tennis and horseshoe pitch ing. There was swimming each day in the college pool. The 350 boys lived in one of the college dormitories and ate in the college cafeteria. After break fast each morning we went to the Institute of Goveramen's Auditor ium. There we beard lectures of representatives from the state de partments in Raleigh, such as Thad Eure, Secretary of State, L. Y. Ballentine, Commissioner of Agriculture; Dr. Charles F. Car roll, State Superintendent of Pub lic Instruction; Ed Kirk of the department of Conservation and Development. We also heard lec tures by several professors at the University, making a total of 22 speakers. We took notes on each lecture and at the end of the week in order to receive a certificate stating we had com pleted the course we were given a (Act B ?OI. As the week progressed we learned the fundamentals of gov ernment and put our knowledge into practice. First we had a city elections we held nominating con state. For the county and state elecions we held nominating con ventions. The climax of the week was the election of our governor The boy whom we elected, Bill Witherspoon of Durham, will be a delegate to Boys Nation held in Washington, D. C. in July. The Boys Slate Program is de signed to train the future citizens of our country to better under stand our government and to be better leaders in their com munity. I am very grateful to the American Legion for electing me and making it possible for me to attend Boys State.
