Your
Power Board
Today

Beginning with this week's is
sure of the Cherokee Scout, I
hope to bring you from time to
time some interesting and perti
nent facts about Your Power
Board. For instance, did you
realize that it has been two
years, June 13, since we held
Open House, gave away all those
nice 150 watt light bulbs, and
had approximately 1.300 people
call during the day? Also, we did
something with pounds and i
pounds of cake and ice cream,:
and gallons of drinks that same
day!
Open House was only the be
ginning of the pleasure we have
had in having you use your
Power Board Building. Many im
portant meetings have been held'
in the building since then. Joint
meetings of the members of the
Chamber of Commerce and
Cherokee County Development
Corporation were held endeavor
ing to locate industry in Murphy
and Cherokee County. The Home
Demonstration Clubs, preparing
and cooking foods that sorely
tempted us to leave our work
and visit the kitchen; Garden
Clubs, Crafters Clubs, Blood
mobile, Firemen's Association,
our newly organized Rescue
Squad, Merchants' Association,
Girl Scouts, Wagon Train, Vet
erans of Foreign Wars, Boyce
Stiles and his Census Takers;
Western Carolina Communities
Development Commission with
our former school superintendent.

Today, as I write, the Murphy j
Garden Club and the Cherokee:
Rose Garden Club are meeting
in the Auditoruim. They have as
their guests, members of the An
drews Garden Ghib. The three
clubs, jointly, are planning for
their annual Fall Flower Show.
Across the hall from them, in the
Conference Room, Miss Thelma
Wheeler and her Murphy Home
Demonstration Cub members are
holding their regular monthly
meeting. This is wonderful, and
as it should be, it is your build
ing and we are happy to see you
tailing advantage of its facili
ties.
Your Power Board offers you
many services other than the use
of the Power Board Building,
services that are absolutely free
to you. Through our Electrical
Development Contract with ttj
Tennessee Valley Authority, we
are able to give you expert ad
vice and assistance in planning
your home and business so that
your electrical needs will be
taken care of, adequately, for
years to come. These services
are available, free, to all our
residential, commercial and in
dustrial consumers.

perhaps there is no better ex

Belgian control of the Congo was
swefr aside under the cry of anti
colonialism and hastily and with
out preparation the Republic of
Congo was created from a tribal
area of approximately one-third
the size of the United States.
REPORTS? I have read reports
that indicate illiteracy is rampant
and that there is not one trained
native doctor, lawyer or engineer
in the land and that only 16 col
lege graduates have come from
the country. Among the many
tribes it is said that some are
still savage and cannabalistic
among these most primitive peo
ple. One newspaperman wrote
that the people are so ignorant of
the meaning of democracy and
freedom that they inquired of
missionaries whether it came in
a package or whether it woukl
have to be gotten at the bank.
BACKGROUND ? There is no
doubt that the Congolese have
been ruled by Belgian as a colony,
sometimes harshly in the distant
past, and that the goal of free
dom should be realized in the
course of time. The reports in

this orderly procedure wys net
followed. The very week of the
birth of the new republic, the
riots began, and It is* sickening
to read of the tragedies, of the
destruction of much of the good
work done by the missionaries. It
now appears that the Congo is
disintegrating into tribal rivalry.
Communism is there with its fa
naticism and destruction. Instead
of a republic there is no law and
order. The lesson to us is clear
that a policy for Africa must be
developed and that this policy
must take into account that we
actually know very' little about
Africa. I
