The program emphasis this year will be on Science, using the Science books loaned by the American Association for the advancement of Science and The National Science Foundation. The total circulation of the Library for September was 5062 volumes. The circulat ion of the Science Traveling Library was 320 volumes. PTA Stresses Needs aid Changes In Our Schools The Murphy PTA met Mon day night. October 17 . Miss Ell* Faye Byers. 6th Grade Teacher, conduced the devotional, accompanied by Mrs. Edna Whitley at t h e piano. Mr. H. A. Matrox, Chairman of the Murphy School Board, and who wai recently reap pointed a director of theNorth Carolina Citizens Committee for Better Schools, explained the work of the Committee. They want a Citizens Com mittee for Better Schools In each county in the state, and feel that the next four years will be profitable ones as more people are becoming in terested in our schools wel fare. Changes i n our schools come about slowly andlnmost cases require additional money. Some sources that may be used to acquire thesefunds are: TheFederalGovemment. our State Government, and our Local or County Government. Since most changes come about as a result of demands by the people, Mr. Mattox stressed the importance of the people studying our school systems and requesting need ed changes. In the discussion It was brought out that while the Murphy Schools had many needs, such as lunchrooms, the schools are good and stu dents from our schools do better than average in the colleges they are attending. Presbytery Meets At Murphy The Women of Asheville Presbytery began their annual meeting on Friday, October 14 with an executive Board plan ning session. They convened at 4:30 p.m. in the Murphy Presbyterian Church. At 6 p.m. they were served a sup per by the Murphy Presbyter ian hostesses, after which an -evening business session was held. Saturday, October IS, at 9 a.m., more than 100 Presby terian women from all of Wes tern North Carolina gathered at the Murphy Presbyterian Church. Coffee and dough nuts were served In the Assembly Room. The meedng began at 10 a.m. withMrs.W.B. Ferguson of Weavervllle. Presbyterial president, presiding. Invocation was by Rev. R. A. Potter. Reports for the year were given by the gen eral officers and committees. The Book of Philltpiani. which will be Intensely studies by the Presbyterian women this year, was introduced by Miss Elizabeth Wilson of M on treat. Mrs. D. R. Freeman, Syno dlcal president, of Knoxville, spoke on "Women's Part la Presenting MlSSMfeft to the Nation." i Mrs. J. E. Wilson spoke on the Birthday Objective . She announced that the offering of 1961 will be divided between work in the Congo and Taiwan. Others on the program were Rev. G. Aiken Taylor, from Weavervllle, ipeaidng on evangelism . Mr. Bruce Fry* of Bristol, speaking on King College. Mrs. F. A. Plummer of Asheville, speaking on Mountain Home for Children, and Dr. R. E. McClure, Ex ecutive Secretary of Asheville Presbytery brought Asheville Presbyter/ announcements. Officers for die year 1961 were elected and Installed. Lunch was served at the School cafeteria.
