Christmas Blaze Destroys Home P.e Murphy Volunteer f Ire Department was called out a s a.m Christmas morning to a fire ar Bass Stiles' home on Second Street In Murphy. Mr. Stiles had bull' a fire In The stove and was then ailed on a taxi trip. While he was out, the house caught fire and hefore fire fighting equipment reached the scene the house was ablaze The flames were extinguished, however, two hours later the house caught fire again. Mem bers of the club packed the baskets Thursdav nizht, Dev ember 22. Some baskets were distributed thai night, wnile others v.' ere delivered on Friday and Christmas Eve. All were delivered .r. tl me tor Christmas . C hrlsnr.as baskets are an annual event lor the Mur phv Lions Club. This year's baskets had a retail value of $9. SO and contained some 2"* different items. Some of the Items were bread, apples, oranges, chewing gum, candy, flour, cereal, snuff, sugar, coffee, soap, potatoes, can ned goods of all tvpes. sa't lard, and margarine. The funds for these Christ mas baskets were raised through the efforts of the dub by selling twine, raf fles, and private donations. Charles Hughes, president of the Club said "1 wish we could have given a basket to every family that needed one, but our funds were limited." Power Board And T own of Murphy Hold Party The Employees of the Mur phy Electric Power Board and the Town of Murphy held their annual Christmas party on Thursday afternoon, Decem ber 22, in the auditorium of the Power Board Ball ding. The auditorium was decor ated within keeping of the yule season with a white Christ mas tree all decorated and lighted. Christmas carols were sung and soft music played through out the afternoon. Vera Robinson and Maurine Be!l served coffee and punch. Gifts were also exchanged, uests were the Mayor and his secretary, Mrs. Joyce Moore, members of the Town ("ounc :) and members of The Murphy Power Board, Town attorneys and office force.
