C? phone HE 7-2517 ?When planting White Pine, especially In Ashe, Avery, Hay wood, Mitchell, Watauga, and Yancey Counties, the planting lite plus a 900-foot surrounding zone should be free of cultivated and w;id rlbes (currant and gooseberry bushes). This Is necessary to avoid the risk of losing the trees from White Pine Blister Rust Disease. The Applicant Agrees That 1. Seedlings shall be used only for forest plantings, erosion control or windbreaks and not as ornamentals or for resale with roots attached. The one exception ? this regulation Is that southern balsam fir seedlings or trans plants for Christmas tree production may be resold by the purchaser with roots attached. (Contact your local commercial nurseryman when trees for landscaping are desired.) 2. After planting, the seedlings shall be given reasonable protection from fire, grazing andother destructive agents. 3. The Forestry Division assumes no responsibility for planting any trees which njay be supplied from the State & Forest Nurseries, but where personell Is available advice 1 as to proper species to plant and instructions In propef | planting methods will be given. - 9 4. The Forestry Division produces the best possible plant ing stock under the varying weather conditions, but since it has no control over the handling and planting of the seedlings once they have been delivered, it gives no < warranty expressed or implied as to the percentage of *" survival, rate of productiveness of any stock. CANCELLATIONS OF ORDERS AFTER JANUARY 15. 1961, WILL INVOLVE A PENALTY OF 25% OF PURCHASE PRICE. 2. Applications may be submitted after July 1, 1960. Order early to be assured of receiving species desired. The recommended spaclngs for forest plantings are | 6' X 7', 6' X 8', and 8* X 8', requiring 1000, 900, and 680 respectively per acre. Christmas tree plantings I should be spaced <? C. or the nearest District Forester, County f Forester, County Forest Ranger, County Farm Agent, or Soil Conservation Service Office. Applications will be filled In the order received. ONE ACRE of TREES FOR ONLY $4.50 North Carolina land owners can now replenish their un used land with timber products and realize an annual re turn o( over on their Investment. The people of North Carolina are fortunate to have the simply of forest tree seedlings raised by four state nur series and sold at cost to the land owners. The four nurseries were established by theN.C. Forest Service under the N. C. Department of Conservation and Development. The nurse\ at Morganmn produces seedlings which cfl be planted In the mountain* and Western Piedmont seeds mainly white and loblolly pines. I The nurseries at Clayton and Goldsboro grow seedling suitable to the Eastern part of the state, chiefly longle^ slash and loblolly pines. * The nursery near Hendersonville grows seedlings sula able for higher elevadons. such as balsam fir. a Low Planting Cost: The cost for 1,000 seedlings, enough to plant an acre. Is suprtslngly low. For Instance: Any landowner can pick up at the nursery nearest to him 1,000 loblolly for only $4.50. White pine requires an additional years growth to become large enough to transplant but cost only $6.00 per 1,000. All varieties will be delivered to any landowner in the state for a (ee of S0( per 1,000. A thousand trees will set an acre, and tt requires aboi 8 to 10 man hours to plant this number by hand. In open Itr planting machines, drawn by tractor, will put out from slC to eight thousand trees per day. These planting machlncu are available In most counties at very little charge and F some counties at no charge at all. In many areas, plantlr contractors are available who will plant the trees for yoj^ Financial Assistance Available: FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Is also available. The Slate Agricultural Conservation Program provides a substantial assistance to landowners, who comply with certain regu lations. A total of $12.00 is available for every acre of trees planted by complying owners. Assistance is arranged only through ACP offices in each county. Lands not listed at the ACP office as complying may jtill be listed for assistance. So, If ? landowner pays $4.50 (or enough trees to plant a) acre and received $12.00 for planting that acre, that leave him $T.S0 to cover the cost of planting. With the availability of planting machines, trees at cos and ACP assistance, landowners can now look forward t> an easier and more abundant planting operations at a muc lower cost than in previous years. Now Is The Time To Order: Now Is the time to order and request deliverv any month. December through March. Places to make applications for seedlings are provided In each county of the state.
