Soil
Conservation
News
By John Smith
The Cherokee County Soil
Conservation District has Just '
completed its seventh year of
operation, the most success
ful so far. During 1960 more
than two hundred farmers were
assisted In establishing one or
more soil and water conser
vation practices on their
farms.
Complete Soll& Water Con
servation Plans were develop
ed by fifty five farmers with
the assistance of technicians of
the Soil Conservation Service,
cooperating with the District.
These plans Include two aerial
photographs of the Individual
farm, one of which shows the
types and classes of soils con
tained within the farm bound
aires, and the second shows
the phuslcal features such as
roads, buildings, field div
isions, streams, woodland, and
so forth. The plans also in -
dude general Information and
instructions for carrying out
the needed conservation mea
sures.
Sixty farmers signed
cooperative agreements with
District, thepreliminarystep
in the process leading to a
complete soil and water con -
servation plan.
At the end of 1960, four
hundred thirty farmers In
Cherokee County signed Co
operative agreements with the
District, and two hundred nine
ty six of these had received
complete soil and water con
servation plans covering their
farms.
One of the most common
practices for which farmers
request assistance is the es
tablishment of die drainag.
During 1960, approximately
Twenty five farmers asked for
assistance In laying off and
establishing tile ditches.
About twenty of these farmers
completed the ditches, result
ing In the use of eight thou
sand one hundred fifty feet of
4 inch and 6 inch drain die.
In addition to the die drain
age, more than two thousand
five hundred feet of open A teh
ee were surveyed and con
structed. These two types of
drainage resulted In better and
. more economical farming one
about on* hundred acres of for ?>
merly wet land, which aow can
produce good crops or fas aire.
Another Important conser
vation practice carried out by a
' large no. at 1 armors Is tree
planting. Conservation farm
ers re-established about two
hundred twenty acres of wood
land. Part of this was by tree
' planting and .by allowing
natural seeding to do the Job.

The daughters of several

among the lovelies presented
as Inaugural Ball sponsors ?
and just a lot of them looked

still beautlfull
One of the most attractive
of them, we thought, was Byrd

back for his sixth term. One
of his biennial opponents was
the late R. Harris, who though
he had been an excellent Lt.

master of Satterfleld.
FACE -LIFTING NEEDED
This marked the seventh
time ? the first was in 1936
? Secretary of State had been
sworn In ? - and Thad E ure's
remaining there those years
? I've thought often ? kept
from having an unusually
good Governor. As they took

WE HELD OUR BREATH
Raleigh, now proud as punch

We hope some smart fel

and a humane oudook will fix
it so that sweet young things,
with six-foot-dismeter even

Now let's face it: We all
held our breath as each girl

would have been a nasty spill

Here's how to fipe your cost:
To figure the monthly cost of using any
electric appliance you must know three
things ;
1. The number of kilowatt-hours that
the appliance will use.
2. Mow much electricity costs.
3. The number of kilowatt-hours that
you now use in one month.
FrOIII the t2bl6 ibOVB, you found the number of kilowatt
hours that an appliance will use in one month.
The chart on the right shows how much you pay for
electricity.
You can get the number of kilowatt-hours that you now
use from an old bill. (This can also be estimated from
the chart on the right.)

How to use this information . .
Let's say you now use around 150
kwh a month. Your bill runs around
$3.00 a month. And you'd lika to
know how much it will coat to op
erate an electric range.
From the figures at the top of the
page, you see that an electric range
uses about 150 kwh a month. Add
this to the number of kwh you now
use. The new total is 300 kwh.
From the chart on the right, you
find that you'd pay $4.63 for 300
kwh. That means your bill would
go up $1.63 a month ? less than 6#
a day ? whan you pdd an alactrie
rang*. (If you now use more than
150 kwh a month, it would be even
less!)
Notice that although the amount of
electricity used exactly doubled, the
sise of the bill went up only $1.63.
? from $3.00 to $4.63.
That's the nice thing about our
"stair-step" rates t . . as your uae
goes up . . . your average coat goee
down!
