Small Watershed Project Needed on Valley River, Says Agent By John Smith ? A gro*4> at about thirty far mer* from the Peach tree and Slow Creek secttaM met at Paechtree School late ta March for the purpoae of dis cussing the T'o-matioa of a Watershed Associstiaa ta dwt area. The Watershed Assocl ?aon will be formed with the Intention of eventually re questing assistance from the Federal Government la cur bing the frequent and dama ging floods which take place on these two crwln, A lew passed by the Congress la 1*54. officially known as Puttie Lav 566. but popularly known aa Che Small Waiarcheds Act. makes it poaalbls tor ta resldsnts of a particular watershed to saak assistance (or coos true tloa wort sad other wster shed Improvements which will virtually eliminate flooding on such a watershed. Jim Laokford, who la Soil Conaervadoidst In Towns Cotaiy, Georgia, attended (be meeting at Peach tree and shooed a number at color slides of construction work which has been recently com pleted in HighBver Creek Wa oersbed. J lm gave ? very ln tereatlng calk In conjwctlon with the slides, and every one I?1SW had a much better Idea of the work which Is necessary on such an undertaking. Jin pointed out that during the heavy rains which fell on 25 February and again on I March, there was absolutely oo flooding of the crack bot toms anywhere In High lower Crack Watershed. One flood pool ebove a dam built on High lower Creek was more than eighteen feet above its normal level, but do Hooding occurred below the dsm. In contrast to the lack of flooding in Hlghtower Crack, all at the streams la Chero kee County were out ot banks and did much damage s> the bottom land* here. The first picture printed with this article shows Val ley River badly flooding. The large Oak tree in the center of this picture is ordinarily on the edge of Valley River on the Andrews Road near the High School. At the time the picture was made, the River had not retched in crest. but the tree is more than thirty five feet oik la the River. The second picture shows a field on the Dickey farm near Marble covered with flood waters from the Valley River. A small watershed pro ject on Valley River would practically eliminate the dan ger at such flooding oc curing again in the future. Mrs. Ethel Breedlove ofMor ganton, N.
