Kissel burg The 1961 feed grain program offers corn or sorghum growers a real opportunity to start a good field of alfalfa or other legume forage crop, says Claud Patterson, chair man of Cherokee County com mittee. He points out that well Umed and fertile com fields are usually an Ideal field for alfalfa. "But this Is an espec ially good year because the farmer can be paid for di verting corn and sorghum ac reage to soil conserving crops," he explains. "Hie cooperating farmer who diverts 20 per cent of his corn and grain sorghum acreage lo soil improving crops will receive a payment equal to 50 percent of the normal yield of this acreage. The payment will be in the form of a negotiable certificate re deemable In grain or cash equivalent of grain. And he can get up to one-half of this payment at the time he signs if). This can go a long way toward getting the land pre pared for the new legume seeding, Mr. Patterson points out. If weeds are a problem, Pat terson recommends using modern weed control methods, including chemicals and sum mer fallow. After weeds have been brought under control, the farmer will have the field in ideal condition to establish a prize-winning legume crop. Late summer seeding of alfalfa and grass mixtures have been successful in many parts of Cherokee county. Re commendations for seeding, liming, fertilizer treatments, seeding mixture best adapted to local and specific soil con ditions are available at the county agricultural extension agent's office.
