One citizen that Andrews la especially proud of with good reason is L. B. Nichols. Forty-one years ago when Mr. Nichols came to Andrews to be principal of the High School, he didn't realize how much Andrews and Cherokee County needed his Intellect, his civic spirit, his warm personality. But Andrews made him feel needed, and most welcome, and he became a part of the community, and took an active part in Its development. Ha taught eight years In the school. In 1928 he opened Nichols Department Store. In 1949, he was elected to serve as Congressman for this district. He serves his church dally. Mr. Nichols has fitted him self into the life of his adopted town, Andrews, and Into the hearts of its people. %, Cathv Vcn Gorder Honored On Birthday Andrews - On May 6, a fun-seeking group of young girls gathered at the home of Dr. Van Gorder to help Cathy celebrate her twelfth birthday. Lunch was served from an attractively laid buffet table on the patio. This consisted of the traditional hamburgers, potato chips, and coca-cola accompanied by a dainty hos tess tray. Dessert was. of course, birthday cake and Ice cream. Cathy's cake was the gift of her grandmother. The afternoon was spent in games and a contest in which Suzanne "Sunshine Box" Sent To Former Hospital Patient Andrews - A "Sunshine Box was sent by Valleywwn Home Demonstration Club on Fri day, to Mrs. Joseph Holton Jones of Wilmington, Dela. The box consisted of various articles, made by members, such as guest towels, lunch eon set, tin craft, enamel ash trays, apron, painting , pot holders, etc. While on vacation Mrs. Jones suffered a stroke at Top ton and was a patient in the District Memorial Hos pital for several weeks. She was taken by ambulance re cently to Memorial hospital in Wilmington and is Im proving dally. Lutheran Women Andrews - The ladies of th St. Andrews Lutheran Church held their May meeting at the Church on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Mrs. Roy Trexler and Mrs. J.G. Carrier were hostesses. Reverend Roy Trexler pre sented the program New officers were elected at this meeting for 1961-62 year. They were: president, Mrs. J. G. Carrier; vice president, Mrs. Wayne Ladd; treasurer, Betty Sue Best; secretary, Mrs. Harry Wolfe. Andrews Wins Andrews - The newly organ ized Smoky Mountain Indepen dent Baseball League opened Its season Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. with Andrews win ning over Cullowhee 7 to 0. Andrews Little League To Open Season Andrews - Andrews Little League baseball teams will open their regular league season Saturday, May 20 at 5:15 pjn. The first game will be Sparkplugs vs. Wolfpacks. Mayor Percy B. Ferebee will attend opening cere monies and make the first throw. Foreign Missions Andrews - Mrs. Hugh Lamb of Ashevllle and Presbyterlal chairman of foreigh missions was guest speaker at a family night simper held at Presby terian Educational Building on Wednesday evening. Mrs. Herbert Sheidy, local chairman of foreign missions, introduced Mrs. Lamb. Mrs. J. J. Stone of Ashe ville and formerly of Andrews, assisted Mrs. Lamb In showing slides illustrating her talk. Mrs. Lamb told the groif) of her recent Journey to Korea, where she visited her daughter, June, a missionary in Kroea.
