Words Of Life By Edward B Whitaon Andrews PresbytarlanChurch ??Then Mid Jaaua unto his disciples, If any man will come alter me . let him deny him self, and take up his cross, and follow me." Matthew 16:24 Here la this vera* of Scripture Chrlat gives three distinct rhallaf s to all ?f us who would call ourselves Christian. His first challenge la B> deny ourselves. Just what la meant by self denial? Quite obviously we should deny our selves of those things which are quite openly evil such as murder and theft. Such things are wrong for anyone whether a Christian or not. But there are many things which we as Christians do, that as far as the world is concerned there Is no harm In them; but even the non -Christians can see that they are things that are off color for a Christian to do. We have to guard our selves against these things and even from the appearance of evil. But I feel that primarily what Christ is speaking of In this verse Is that we should deny ourselves of anything, even things which are In their very nature good, that would come In the way. of placli^ God first In our lives. When Jesus was calling His disciples one of them asked him to let him first go and bury his father ( and there is certainly nothing evil about burying the dead) but Jesus told him to follow him and let the dead bury their dead. Ifs a matter of seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness ChrisA second challenge Is (or us to take up our cross. Some people actually seem to think that Christ was the only one that had ro take up a cross . Peter tells us "for even here unto were ye called; because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example that ye should follow His steps."- < knew one boy who thought that his cross was the pain he suf fered from being affllctedwith | arthritis. I had a woman to tell me that she was positive that her cross was a brutal and drunken husband that she had to put up with. But these types of things are not our crosses. Our cross is something very difficult, it is an everyday matter. It is the crucufying of our own will and putting in its place the will of God. It is to crucify that very strong thing CARD OF THANKS The family of Dlllard E. Griffith wishes to express ap preciation and graditude to friends and relatives who came to our help In time of need. There are spiritual riches to be found in life ? by those with the determination to seek them. But don't make the common mistake of assuming that one Sundav in Church should satisfy the search. Spiritual riches come gradually with religious growth. As a family makes worship and religious stud*" part of everyday living, the treasures of God begiti to accumulate in the character and experience of that family. You'll probably be disappointed if jou merely give religion a try. But your earnestness will be rewarded when you make Christianity the foundation of your life. THC CHURCH FOR ALL . . . The Church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of rharactei and good cit izenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four Mnind reasons why every person should attend >e:?ices regularly and support the Church. They are: (11 For his own sake. '2) For his children's sake. (31 For the ?.? ke of his community and nation. (4) For ine sake of thr Church itself, which ?? Js his moral and mac rial support.
