MURPHY HARDWARE VL 7-2110 Tennessee Street You And Your Insurance Ways to Prevent Fires Last week we discussed the first step you should take in cutting down the risk from fires In your homes from elec tric wiring and electric appli ances. That column stressed the necessity of being sure that the appliances in your home were Underwriters Lab^-a tories Approved. The second step necessary to minimize the ever present risk of fire is to be sure that none ot the electrical cir cuits in your home are overloaded. Frequently, we add extra electrical appliances witri out checking to see whether we overload the particular circuit involve. When die elec trician wired your home when it was new, he probably pro vided for several circuits, enough to accommodate the electrical load contemplated in your home at that time. If you add another light, or another appliance to one of these circuits, the operation of these appliances or lights at the same time with the other lights on the circuit may call for more electricity than the size wire originally used was designed to carry, and the resultwill be that these wires will have a tendency to heat up. The slightest loose connection may actually cause enough heat to start a fire. In this push button age we are adding more and more electrical appliances to our homes. If care Is not observed and a competent electrician called in to analyze the cir cuits involved, we may over load them to the extent of causing a fire. Of course, the fuse in your fuse box is designed to pro tect against an overload, and to blow when too much load is placed on the circuit. Too often, however, we have placed a fuse of higher capacity in the circuit which does not pro perly operate. The resultmay be catastrophe. If you feel that such a con dition might prevail in your home, you should call a com petent electrician to analyze the wiring in your home, and if he recommends additional wiring or larger wires to accommodate the load, follow his recommendations. Proper precaution of this sort may save your from seri ous financial loss in a fire since most of us never really carry enough insurance to re imburse us for the many items in our homes, not to mention family heirlooms, pictures and cherished items collected over a period of a lifetime. Far more important, it might save the life of some member of the family in some mid night fire. If you have any questions regarding your insurance, this column will be glad to answer them if an inquiry is addressed to Hyde Insurance Agency. T raffic Deaths RALEIGH ?
