Dove and Rail
Seasons Announced
The N.C. Wildlife Com
mission has announced the
seasons and bag limits on
doves, rails, gallinules, wood
cock and Wilson's snipe. Dates
for the gunning season for
these birds were selected
from a framework of dates
established by the U. S. Fish
and Wildlife Service.
Clyde P. Patton, Executive
Director of the N. C. Wildlife
Resources Commission, said
that the Commission has again
selected a split season for
dove hunting, the first segment
being from September 9
through October 14, and the
second from December 13
through January 15. Shooting
hours will again be from noon
undl sunset, and the bag
limits ? the same as last
year ? will be 12 dally and
24 in possession after the
first day's shooting.
Next on the list are marsh
hens (rails and gallinules) with
the season running from Sep
tember 20 through November
28. Bag limits will be 25
dally or in possession for
sora rails, and 15 dally or 30
in possession for Virginia and
clapper rails, and gallinules.
Shooting hours will be from
sunrise to sunset.
The woodcock season will
open Thanksgiving Day,
November 23 / and extend
through January 1, 1962, with
a daily bag of four birds and
a possession limit of eight.
Shooting hours for woodcock
will be from sunrise id sunset.
Wilson's snipe may be
hunted from November 23
through December 22, with an
allowable daily bag and pos
session limit of eight birds
and shoodng hours from sun
rise to sunset.
Patton warned migratory
game hunters that a new
federal regulation this year
requires hunters to "make a
reasonable effort to retrieve
any migratory game bird
killed by him and Include such
bird in his daily bag limit."

You And Your Insurance
Municipal Fire Protection
Can Pay Big Dividends
When is it best to fight
a fire? Before it starts.
To be effective, fire pre
vention must be a community
project. It must be conducted
with equal energy in the home,
at the office and at town hall.
The importance of main
taining top notch municipal
fire protection should be
stressed particularly.
This phase of fire protection
was graphically brought to
mind after reading reports of
a talk given recently by
Everett W. Fowler, chief en
gineer of the National Board
of Fire Underwriters.
Mr. Fowler warned chat
many cities in the United
States are losing out on public
benefits by failing to see the
advantages of Improved muni
cipal fire protection.
I believe his points were
well taken and bear repeating.
Comparing goodflreflghting
services to a savings account,
Mr. Fowler said that when a
city pays out money for in
stalling or Improving fire pro
tection, the municipality, in
effect. Is putting money into a
bank and can anticipate regu
lar returns in benefits to resi
dents of the community.
Illustrating his argument,
Mr. Fowler outllnedaslxpoint
dividend earning program
based on better fire pro
tection.
1. Greater safety against
injury and accidental fire
death for residents of the
community.
2. Better job security, since
many burned out businesses
either fall to reopen, move to
a different city or an Inopera
tive for an extended period
after a serious fire.
3. Greater attractiveness to
business and Industry looking
for an appropriate city In
which to locate.
4. Improved business pros
pects resulting from lessened
dangers from indirect losses.
5. Lower rates of insurance
generally result If the
municipal fire protection Is
Improved to a sufficient de
gree.
6. Greater presdge for the
community.
These are among the many
reasons Improved fire pro
tection deserves our most
vigorous support. Fire pre
vention, however, saves more
than money ? it saves lives.
Did you know that the Town
of Andrews has a higher
Bureau rating for fire protec
tion that Murphy does and that
as a consequence they enjoy
cheaper fire rates than
Murphy?
