INDIAN WEEK CONTINUES AT
PEMBROKE STATE UNIVERSITY

dent Association continues to celebrate
Indian Week at Pembroke State Univer
sity. Activities continue through Friday.
Archie Lynch, Haliwa-Saponi. is presi
dent of the student association.
Tuesday night the students honored
retiring teachers, including Mrs. Cattle
M. Hunt, Mr. George Chavis and Mr.
Winfred Lowry. Also present was Mr.
Albert Hammonds, who was honored in
recent years as a retired teacher.
Guest speaker was Dr.Gerald May
nor, chairman of the Education De
partment at PSU and advisor to AISA.
Supt. Purnell Swell also gave special
comments to the assemblage meeting at
Town and Coutnry Restaurant in
PemUiuu.
The student association heard from
A. Bruce Jones, executive director of
the North Carolina Commission of
Indian Affairs and LRDA executive
director, Ken Maynor Wednesday
morning.
On Monday it was a special celebra
tion of the Indian heritage with special
emphasis on Indian regalia, crafts, food
and dancing.
The next event is the gospel singing
tonight. This takes place at PSU's
Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.
There will be no admission.
Friday, April 18, a pow wow will be

The Conference opened with a
