VISUAL ARTS The Visual Arts program will involve various areas of art Painting and drawing are the most critical areas to be taught The curriculum will allow for all the great stages of its students, emotional, perceptional, intellectual, social aesthet e and creative The program will provide the self-confidence through creative media and to gain a better appreciation of the arts Along with broadening the student's frame of reference, the program will help him build a greater awareness of the things around him The students will hold exhibitions and enter natural competition The Lumbee River Native American Center for the Arts visual arts students have been very busy during the 1981 Summer Institute. They began their summer study with visits to local historical sites. The art exhibit will reflect much of what they learned frqm these visits. The visual arts exhibit, which will be in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center on August 21, 1981, will reflect local Indian culture and will also include 3-dimensk>nal still lifes of Indian History. There will also be a pottery exhibit, featuring potte.y fired by the traditional Indian method. There are 32 visual arts students, both advanced and beginners who will be exhibiting at the performance. In addition to the several pieces submitted by each student, eight of the students will have a group exhibit. The visual arts students represent the following schools: Deep Branch School, Cumberland County Schools, Hoke County Schools. Red Springs City Schools, Southside School, Rowland High School, Union Elementary. Pembroke Senior High, Pembroke Middle School, Pembroke Elementary. Pembroke Junior High, Fairmont High, Prospect High and Maxton High. Selections from Roger and Hammerstein's Oklahoma will be presented on August 21. 1981 at Pembroke State University's Performing Arts Center at 8:00 p.m. This production will be performed by the Center's Summer Institute participants. The students have been involved in intense training for the past five weeks. Admission is free. August 21,1981 Pembroke State University's Performing Arts Center - 8:00 p.m. The Center will be holding auditions for the 1981-82' academic year in September. Any student interested in Joining the Center for the Arts should contact their high school guidance counselor in September, or call the Center for the Arts office at 521-2401. In terested students must fill out an application and audition for the areas they are interested in.
