Gov. Hunt receives 'First in Flight' Plates RALEIGH?The graphic "First in Flight" license plate debuted on January 11, 1962. Secretary W.R. "BUI" Rober son Jr. of the North Carolina Department at Transporation (NCDOTj presented Governor Jim Hunt with the offtcal "Number i" license plate to announce the initial series of the new graphic plates. The design of the hbW graphic license plate has the words "North Carolina" and "First in Flight" imprinted in red, the numbers cast in blue, and the Wright airplane print ed in light blue. The phrase "First in Flight' will first appear on the personalized and official plates. Approximately 28,500 per-onalized plates and 897 official plates with graphic design are being mailed and should be received by vehicle owners no later than February 15, 1982, said Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) of ficials. The personalized plates and official plates (issued to of ficials like legislators, judges. Council of State, etc.) are issued annually at a cost of S10, plus the regular license fee. The plates will have the year embossed on the upper corner of the j>late. Officials at DMV note that those owners renewing under the staggered registration system will receive non-graphic plates until their current inventory of approxi mately 200,000 non-graphic plates is exhausted. These officials anticipate the non graphic plate inventory will be depleted by late March 1982. The last plate number in the non-graphic series is ZRZ999. Once the non-graphics are deDleted. vehicle owners will KZZ receive the new graphic plates. The graphic plate being issued at the local branch offices will cany the numbers AAA11 through ZZ2100. The mail order service from DMV in Raleigh ' will be issuing graphic plates in the series ZSA101 through ZZZ999. The non-graphic plates have been designed for multi-year use. Whea they become illegi ble, the non-graphic plates can be exchanged at DMV or at a local branch office at no charge. The series AAA 101 through JAY 999, in use since 1975, are being recalled due to their illegible, rusty or faded condtion. All plates in . this series will be replaced by August 15, 1982. The non-graphic plate can be secured by a vehicle owner who desires to repalce a currently valid plate with a "First in Flight" graphic ' plate by paying a re placement fee of $9.00. The department of Cor rections' Enterprise Section located at Central Prison manufacturers the graphic plates at the rate of approxi mately 15,000 per day. In 1975 DMV first began issu ing permanent license plates made of steel. Because of the process of deterioration, DMV officials switched to alum inum plates. The new graphic plates made of aluminum will be used as long as the con figurations on the plate are legible. State Senator Hensen Barnes of Wayne County, State Senator Monk Harring ton of Bertie County, and State representative Dan Lilley of Lenior County active ly supported legislation authorizing the "First in Flight" plates. The oldest road in the US is the El Camino Rfcal, which was established in 1581. It nine from Santa Fa to Chihua hua, Mexico and is today known as Highway 85. ? ? ? -JJ _ w? 1 __=n A squirrel may scrounge as much as twenty bushels of nuts and roots and seeds and put them in a number of caches scattered around his territory.
