Wrestling Cham pionships. Another big event wiO be April 3 "Super Saturday 1982." PEMBROKE STATE BASEBALL TEAM OF 1982 FEATURES BLEND OF YOUTH PLUS EXPERIENCE When PSU's baseball team of 1962 takes to the field, the Braves will be bringing with diem a blend of both youth and experience. PSU opens March 1 at N.C. State. * On the 23-man roster is 10 returnees and 13 newcomers. The returnees helped post PSU's 18-22-1 mark of last year, a school record for most games played in a single season. "We should field a better hitting ballclub in 1982," stated Pembroke State Coach Harold Ellen after completing fall practice. "We should have more long-ball possibili ties and overall defense shou ld be improved."" Coach Ellen continued, "Pitching will be our main weakness, however, as we win need consistent pitching. We have some young players, but Oar (the--tamp) suocess win depend on hewiast they develop. I feel we'll be able to score runs." Let'a take a look at the 1982 diamonders by position. C ate bee Junior Brian Tar ley at Kensington, MD sophomore James WUte at Statesvffle, and freshman Dean Davis of Hoiden Beach wfll handle the catching du ties. "Turley is a good sound defensive player and looked good with the bat in feO . practice," commented Coach Ellen. "White is a fine retur ning defensive player who needs work on his hitting. He will play mote this year. Davis will develop into a good . catcher, but needs to learn the ropes." First Base-First base wil be handled by junior A1 Warmack of Cove City and For ace Oxendine of Pem broke. "I feel very good about our first base position," contin ued Coach Ellen. "Warmack has worked hard on his hitting coming from Mt. Olive Junior College. He is an excellent defensive player. Oxendine returns after being in the U. S. Army and if he returns to his form, he will give us the long-ball threat." Seeand Baas Senior Mar shall Little of Morven and Sophomore Stanley Adams at Benson will man second. "This will be a strong position for us defensively," Coach Ellen said. "Little is a good hitter and Adams is a strong defensive player." Thfrd Baaa-The third base position features freshman Ty Moore of Lumber ton and freshman Bobby Bousman of Garner. "Moore has adequate defense and has a lot of hitting possibilities," contin ued Coach Ellen. "Bousman is young and has good hustle. He meets the ball well, but just needs some experience.- \ ffhsitstsii?"1 feel good about this position with junior Ron Seidel and freshman Tim Milfard, NJ and Caradoena b from Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. en should give as improved kljiln , nnsnsns ?+ ? darmsfr , mrxing power mu loequiit dcfefMC M COldl Bfcll itoitd* Outfielden wfll include the following: Juior Clark Nance cf Belmont, junior Mike Cov ington of Dun Pries, Vs., junior Greg Bryant of Fay ettevflle, sophomore Gary Hunt of Fairmont, freshmen Brian Braxton of Raleigh and David leek of Pembroke. ITlilhg "Til wfll be a very big question mark," Coach Ellen felt. "We wfll have no consistent starter, bet hopefully all wfll come throu gh for if not, It wfll be s long year." Hnriers for the Braves include senior Garry Autry of Stedman, sophomore Allen Oxendine of Pembroke, soph omore Jerry Moore of Arling ton, Vs., sophomore Jeff Gaster of Sanfbrd, along with freshman Guy Sanderson of Kinston, and freshman Sam my Shacklefbrd of Rowland. In addition, Nance and Forace Oxendine wfll be used some on the mound. > Coach Ellen, starting his 15th year as head coach, says the Braves 1982 baseball schedule is tough. And it might be since opponents on the schedule include Duke, University of South Carolina, N.C. State, Western Carolina and UNC-Charlotte in addi tion to the Carolines Confe rence schedule. "If we can get some adequate pitching, we (Pem broke State) will be a contender for the Carolines Conference Championship," predicted Coach Ellen. "Lea gue teams expected to be tough wfll include Wingate, High Point, Eton, and Pfeiff er. Hopefully our pitching will come through."
