Adult Education: A Family Affair by Patsy Lowety Today we hear so much about how parents lose concern for their children, and vice-versa. But at the Smyrna Adult Edu cation Center, sponsored by Lumbee Regional Development Association, we have found' <6is to be a grave untruth. Mrs. Lena Jacobs is one of thqse parents who shows her children, both those at home and those married and living on their own, the concern and affection we all need in a society like the one in which we live today. Mrs. Jacobs not only encouraged her children to further their education, but she is also setting the best example possible by going back to school herself. Mrs. Jacobs is the mother of 11 childfeA-5 girls and 6 boys ranging in age from 15 to 36. Both Mrs. Lena and her daughter, Virginia Jacobs, enrolled at the Smyrna Center on September 15, 1981. After being in the center one week, Virginia took the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) test and passed with a score of 264. Virginia, who dropped out of school after finishing the 10th grade in 1962, is the mother of two boys, ages 10 and 12. She is presently serving as an Instructional Aide at the Smyrna Center and attends Robeson Technical College two nights per week. You might be wondering what is so special about a mother and her daughter going back to school to receive their GED. Well, this is only the beginning of the story. In the last 3 months, Mrs. Lena has had two more daughters who passed the GED. One daughter, Teresa Fields, dropped out of school after completing the 8th grade. : She enrolled in the Center on October 1, 1981. She was tested on an 11th grade level. She attended classes regularly and on November 16 took the GED test at Robeson Technical College and passed with a score of 225. Since passing, Teresa has enrolled at Robeson Tech in the secretarial field. She is receiving assistance from the Basic Education Opportunity Grant (BEOG) offered through Robeson Tech. Another daughter, Betty Jacobs Siemers began classes on December 8, 1981. She was tested on an 8th grade level. DCiij was cApccuu^ a ciuiu when she enrolled in the Center. She remained in this condition throughout her classes two nights per week, studying constantly. She took the GED test at Robeson Tech on February 23 and 25. Betty dropped out of school in 1971 after completing the 9th grade. She plans to attend Robeson Tech and major in accounting after the birth of her child. Mrs. Lena Jacobs is indeed a proud mother, and has every right to be. Two more children, Leon Fields and Hilda Jones, have also begun classes at the Smyrna Center. Other relatives who attend the Center are: Elizabeth Fields, daughter-in-law; Shirlene Fields, daughter-in-law; Catherine Smith, Magalen Jacobs (a previous GED stu dent), Hazel Scott and Delor es Hemingway, all nieces of Mrs. Jacobs. "I am so proud of all my children." said Mrs. Lena Jacobs. "1 have a set of twins who will graduate from Lit tlefield High School in June of this year. Two younger child ren are enrolled at Littlefield Timmy Ray in the 10th grade and James Allen in the 7th. 1 hope they will continue in school so we can all gradu ate." Indeed. Mrs. Lena has a right to be proud. She has done a marvelous job raising her children and has been very instrumental in seeing that her children receive an education. She is a fine lady and the staff and students of the Smyrna Center are very proud of her. Ulyssas S.
