Monday. April 26. Detec
tive Garth Locklear, Coordi
nator of "Safety Town" in
Robeson County, spoke to the
staff of Lumbee Regional
Development Association,
Inc. at their tegular weekly
staff meeting.
The purpose of "Safety
Town" is to introduce safety
methods to preschool-age
children. According to Detec
tive Locklear, "Safety has
been left out of our children's
early training."
"Safety Town" is a mini
town scaled down to acco
modate the pre-school child
ten, complete with streets,
signs, etc. The student drives
through the mini-town in a
an
niniature car, observing the
safety tips* and methods
aught him in the classroom.
The uniquely new concept.
n early childhood training
caches the student safety
wocedures and methods in
he classroom for one hour,
rhere is a ratio of S students
>er teacher. After the hour of
:lass room training, the stu
lent is taken to "Safety
[own" to practise what he
las learned. The course con
sists of 2 hours per day, for 10
lays. At the end of the
!0-hour course the student
graduates, complete with a
xrtificate.
According to Deputy Price
:rom the Sheriff's Department
vho accompanied Detective
Locklear at the staff meeting,
? police officer it on duty with
the teacher to answer quer

children. They were aiked:
'What does a policeman dot*
3 -oat at 5 replied that a
policeman locks up people.
Hopefully Ala program wfll
help improve the attitude
between-the-children and
police officers."
Said Detective Locklear: "It
would be nice to incorporate
'Safety Town's' 20-hour cour
se into school curriculum."
