" Facts From the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Fofst Service { America: The Land Of The Forests The young and growing pine forests of America's South can support greater timber harvest?as can most forests throughout the country. In these days of crowdsd cities and booming subur ban areas, many people may find it hard to realise that a third of America's land some 737 million acres?is classified as forest. Nearly two thirds of that area is defined as "commer cial"?that is, timber land capable of growing at least 20 cubic feet of wood per acre, per year, that is mar ketable for product use. Some 25 million acres could be classified as meet ing the standards of produc tive timberland but have been reserved either by law or public agency action for wilderness, scenic areas or other special designations. A big part of this is national forest land which produces 16 percent of the nation's timber for wood products. Still more public forest land may possibly be desig nated as wilderness area, further restricting the avail ability of timber for wood products. So, where will we get our wood for houses, paper and other products in the future? Nearly three-quarters of our timberland can be found in the humid Eastern half of the U.S., about equally divided between the North and the South. The remainder is concentrated along the Pacific coast and in the Rocky Mountain states :? t More than 60 percent of our total volume of timber is in "sawtimber"?trees large enough to be sawed into boards. Most of the remainder falls into the "poletimber" category, some suitable for lumber or veneer, the rest usable only for pulp, fuel and other wood products. The U.S. Forest Service tells us that the annual net timber growth (the excess of growth over losses from harvesting, insects, fire, etc.) per acre in 1976 was 49 cubic feet. This is only three-fifths of what can be attained on land that is fully occupied with growing trees. Even that figure, the ex perts say, is far below what could be achieved with in tensive forest management practices. They include greater investments of time and money in growing trees through use of fertilisers, pest controls, genetically im proved seedlings and other such methods. The Forest Service has determined these practices can provide us the wood we need from available commercial forests and we can still save our parks and wildernesses. . These investments could pay off in more wood at reasonable costs for Americans of the next genera- J| lAcf tion and those tUjiJV thereafter. ASK ME ABOUT 8 ALOE VESA PRODUCTS J.LJL. I 105 S. Mari SI.
