Addresses
Lumber
River
Basin
)? Committee
Speaking to the Lumber
River Basin Committee Den
nis Ramsey said, "In the past
30 years, especially in the
past 15, water quality in the
Lumber River has signifi
cantly improved."
f Ramsey, Regional Super
Visor of the N.C. Division of
Environmental Management
in Fayetteville was commen
ting on water quality man
agement programs in the
fjimber River basin.
"In the 1960s most munici
palities and industries dump
ed untreated waste directly
into the river," he said.
"Since then major improve
ments have been made. To
day no permits are issued
which lead to a deterioration
of water quality," he added.
Ramsey outlined the pro
cedures by which permits to
discharge waste into surface
water are issued. The Division
of Environmental Man
agement plays a major role in
that process.
Ramsey also stated that
water quality along the Lum
ber River is continuously
monitored at a series of
gauging stations.
Chairman L.D. Hunnings
said the October meeting of
the Committee will be in
Laurinburg and will be hosted
by the Scotlant County Parks
gnd Recreation Department.
