Robeson Tech's next six week Career Development course will begin Monday. November I. 1982. This class is geared to help the unem ployed prepare for and obtain a job. RTC secretaries and busi ness faculty members attend ed a PD1 (Professional De velopment Institute) Confe rence October 2h 1982 spon sored by the State Depart ment of Community Colleges. The conference presented practical tips for improvement within their jobs. UNION CHAPEL 'TEACHER OF YEAR' Mis. Kathy H. Biggs, Tencb er of the Year at Union Chapel Schaoi. Mrs. Kathy H. Biggs was recently chosen as "Teacher of the Year" at Union Chapel School. She was chosen to represent her school of 22 teachers in the county com petition to be held at a later date. Mrs. Biggs was honored at a tea held in the school cafctiMla wherfc she wsf pre sented a plaque of "Teacher of the Year" by Mr. Wade C. Hunt, principal. She received a lovely pink corSage of pom-poms from Mrs. Vivian F. Locklear. assistant princi pal. Mr. Hunt recognized Mrs. Biggs as "Teacher of the Year" and expressed his appreciation of her many talents as well as an out standing teacher. The nominating committee for this event consists of Mrs. Linda Hunt, chairperson, assisted by Mrs. Annie K. Gavin, Mrs. Ruby Sm>,h and Mrs. Fanmc M. Oxendir Mrs. Elaine White, cafeteria Manager, provided refresh ments for the tea. Presently, Mrs. Biggs is teaching a kindergarten and first grade combination class. She has taught at Union Chapel School for five years. She is a native of Cabarrus Count v and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. Upon graduation she entered Pembroke State University where she received a B.S. degreein Early Childhood Education in 1977. She was on the Dean'sList and graduated Magna Cum Laude. In 1980 she received a masters degree from PSU. She has been a member of the North Carolina Association of Education, Na tional Education Association and the Aasociation of Class rooWV "TVachers for sCvefaT years. In 1980-81 she served as Union Chapel's represen tative for NCAE and ACT. Mrs. Biggs is very active in church activities. As a mem ber of First Baptist Church of Lumberton, she sings in the Sanctuary Choir, is co-direc tor of the preschool choir, a member and former president of Baptist Young Women, and sings with "Daysong," a trio which performs in various churches and well as for civic groups. Active participation in community and civic clubs include being a member of the Lumberton Junior Woman's Club where she is presently serving as recording secretary of the club. She is an active member of the Petal Pushers Garden Club and is presently serving as Parlia mentarian of this club. Mrs. Biggs is also a member of Lumberton Ladies Racquet Club. Mrs. Biggs is married to Mr. David A Biggs and they reside in Lumberton. Her hobbies include singing, ten nis. cross stitching and water skiing. Lumberton was the setting of the double-ring ceremony which joined Ms. Deborah Ellen Greene and Dr. Ben Hardin in marriage on Satur day. October 16. 1982 at 3:00 in the afternoon. The offici ating minister was the Rev. Christopher L. Hunt. The bride is he daughter of Mrs. Virginia W. Greene of Chadbourn. NC and Billy L. Greene of Lumberton. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bazie Hardin of Pem broke. A program of nuptial music was provided by the String Quartet composed of Mr. Ken Ellington. Mrs. Susan Elling ton. Ms. Sharon L. Faucett and Lilly Lyes, all of Fay etteville. The bride descended the circular staircase unescorted. She wore a gown of Ivory. The fabric of the gown was of Brussel net ornamented in schiffli lace over ecru satin. The entire gown was made of schiffli lace. The bodice was fitted with bib-effect; high ruffled collar. The sleeves p were designed with Leg- o* mutten fitted sleeve, ruffles at wrist. The shirt was a sophis ticated gathered tealength with a designer border. A satin sash was worn at the waist. Her headpiece was a circular flower wreath halo. The bride carried a cascade of Lily of the Valley, white roses and pink roses and Enchant ment lilies. Miss Kristi Yvette Greene, sister of the bride was Maid of Honor. She wore a Mauve two-piece taffeta gown with stand up ruffled neckline to waist, with surplice bodies. The sleeves were puffed at shoulder and featured a nar row waist. The gown was designed wth a puplum at the waistline and featured a slightly gathered floor length skirt. The Maid of Honor's flowers were a nosegay of mixed silk flowers in soft colonial shades. Honorary attendants were Mrs. Almon Hall of St. Pauls and Miss Tammy Cooper of Lumberton, friends of both the bride and groom. Ertle Knox Chavis. lifetime friend and classmate of the groom, served as Best Man. The brideis a 1971 graduate of West Columbus High School, Cerro Gordo, NC and a 1976 graduate of South eastern Community College Nursing School Program. She is employed by Dr. Ben Hardin. Mrs. Horace Locklear invited the guests into the dining room to serve themselves from a table overlaid in an ivory antiqued lace cloth. A Silver Candlebra held an arrangement of pink roses, a alstroemeria lilies, daisies, nerine lilys, baby's breath, in tones of lavender, pink, yell- I ow. white and blue. Mrs. Almon Hall and Ms. Tammy Cooper poured punch from a sUver appointed bowl. Mrs. Locklear served the tiered wedding cake and bridegroom's cake. The bride groom's mother asked the bridegroom's cake. Ms. Joyce Moore of Lum berton received and register ed gifts which were displayed in the library. Guests were entertained with instrumental music from the String Quartet which played throughout the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Locklear of Pembroke received guests in the library and on the backporch. Good byes were said to the bride and groom. REHEARSAL Mr. and Mrs. Horace Lockear were hosts at a wedding rehearsal on Thurs day evening before the wed ding at the Locklear residen ce, Route 8, Neddih Serca, Lumberton. Students Participate in ASU Summer Science Program Boone--This summer some 400 gifted and talented high school students participated in the summer science pro gram at Appalachian State ^University. The program, which is designed to encour age student insight and crea tivity in several areas of science, gives the students the opportunity to gain valu able field and laboratory experience. Students were nominated for the program by their high school principals.
