VISITS PROSPECT
Carlee Lowry
Principal from 1942-1955
Prospect School had a visit from a
former principal, Carlee S. Lowry, on
Wednesday, Nov. 10. Mr. Lowry spoke
to the students during a special
assembly.
Mr. Lowry worked for the Bureau of
Indian Affairs from 1956 until 1979 as a
guidance counselor, assistant principal,
and also as Safety Director for all the BIA
schools in the United States and Alaska.
Mr. Lowry is retired from working with
the State Driver Education Department
as an instructor. He was vacationing in
the area. He was visiting with his wife's
family of the Saddletree area.
Mr. Lowry served as principal of
Prospect'School frtjm 1942 until 19S5. He
was principal during the construction of
the first brick building at that school.
Another accomplishment during his
tenure there was the organization of the
Agriculture Department.
Mr. Lowry and his wtfe, Dorothy, live
in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their
five children all reside in Mexico and
Arizona.
During his visit to his native Robeson
County, Mr. Lowry attended the Schol
arship Banquet at Pembroke Slate
University.
Mr. Lowry is the son of Abner B. and
Rose Lowry of the Hopewell area. He has
several brothers in the area, including
Ira Pate Lowry of Pembroke.
Mr. Lowry stated that he really
enjoyed his visit to the area, and
especially the PSU banquet and the
visit to Prospect School.

the Robeson County Schools has announ
ced that Mrs. Sandra Strickland, sixth
grade teacher at Fairgrove Elementary
School, has been selected as the 1982-83
"Teacher of the Year" for the Robeson
County School System, having been
selected from among nineteen candida
tes representing all areas of the county.
Mrs. Strickland will represent the
system in regional competition later in
the year when she will compete against
some seventeen (17) other candidates.
The winner of this competition will
proceed to the state level.
A graduate of Pembroke State Univer
sity, Ms. Strickland has a B.S. degree in
Music Education (1975), a B.S. degree in
Elementary Education (1978), and a
MEd. degree in Elementary Education
(1981). She received her public school
education through the Fairgrove and
Fairmont schools, graduating valedictor
ian at Fairgrove High School in 1972.
In addition to her teaching duties, Ms.
"Strickland has been active in civic and
community efforts including serving as
music/vocal director for "Strike at the ,
Wind" and music instructor in the <
Upward Bound program at Pembroke
State University. She is a member of (
New Prospect Church where she serves
as church pianist and organist, Acteens
Group Leader, and as an assistant
Sunday School teacher. She is a member
of the national, state and local chapters
of the Association of Educators and
Sigma Alpha loto Music Fraternity.
Ms. Strickland's philosophy is center
ed around her belief that "all children
have worth...and need to be loved." She
feels it is the duty of a teacher to be the
person who helps each child recognize
his or her worth and who extends the
needed love each child may desire.

CHARLOTTE. N.C.-Tim Brayboy, a
legendary sports figure in this area in the
60's, will serve as the field judge in the
46th Annual Shrine Bowl, the high school
all-star classic, on December 11, 1982 at

Brayboy, a consultant in the Divi
sion of Health, Physical Education,
Safety and Sports, N.C. Dept. of
Instruction now makes his home in Cary,
N.C. He is married to the former Byrtis
Dial; they have one daughter.
Brayboy has an outstanding athletic
background. He was a regular for four
years at Pembroke State from 1961
1964 batting over .300 for his career.
Ray Pennington, now chairman of the
Health and Physical Education De
partment at PSU, but Bray boy's coach
during his last year at PSU, recalls,
"Tim...an outstanding person, did a real
fine job for us. He was our lead off hitter
and did a good job of getting on base. He
had a knack for this. A team leader, he
was our regular second baseman until
our shortstop was sidelined - then Tim
took over shortstop in fine fashion."
Tim Brayboy, a native of Pembroke,
North Carolina, was all conference
basketball and baseball and outstanding
Senior Athlete at Pembroke High School
during his high school days and received
a B.S. degree in Health and Physical
Education from Pembroke State Uni
versity where he played varsity baseball
and was named Outstanding Senior
Athlete. He obtained an M. Ed. in
Health, Physical Education and Re
creation from West Chester State
College in Pennsylvania. Brayboy has
officiated high school football for seven
teen years including numerous State
play-off games, the 1975 and 1981 ""forth
Carolina High School Athletic Associ
ation State 3A Championship games and
the 1978 North Carolina Independent
Schools Athletic Association champion
ship game.
1:30 p.m. is Kick-off of the 46th
Annual Shrine Bowl Game of the Caro
lines between the High School Senior
All-Stars from North and South Carolina
High Schools. The Game and Half-Time
I Pageantry will be broadcast over the
Shrine Bowl Network consisting of some
40 Radio Stations in the two Carolines,
and over a Television Network of nine '
stations, with WSOC originating the
networks.
YOUNG DEMOCRATS
ELECT OFFICERS
The Robeson County Young Demo
crats elected new officers Monday night
during its last meeting of the year.
Among those elected was Deborah
Baldwin, the first Black woman ever to
be chosen Prsident of the organization,
which is composed of Democrats be
tween the ages of 18 and 35. Baldwin,
who is employed bythe Southeastern
Regional Mental Health office, lives in
Lumberton and has been active in the
YDC on both the county and state level.
She currently serves on the state
caucus of the YDC.
Other officers elected included Chip
Bass as Vice-President, Denise Ozendine
as Secretary, and Ann Rigsbee as
Treasurer.
N.C. EDUCATION AL OFFICE
PERSONNEL MEETING
On November 11, 1982 the N.C.
Educational Office Personnel Of District
9 (Robeson County, Cumberland County.
Hoke County and Harnett County) held
their annual meeting at the Harnett
County Central High School in Angier,
N.C. Robeson County was well represen
ted with eighteen (18) secretaries
attending from the Central Office of the
Robeson County Board of Education and
the Robeson County Schools. A work
shop was held in the afternoon entitled
"Introduction to Word Processor-Com
puters". taught by NCR WfWSffBlhsi.
Robeson County was responsible for file
door prizes. The local merchants donated
over 100 gifts. The support by the
merchants to this organization was very
much appreciated. The theme for this
year is "Weave Us Together." The
officers of this local chapter of Educa
tional Officer Personnel are: Ms. Pam
Locklear, President; Ms. Faye Floyd,
Vice President; Ms. Dolores Powers,
Secretary; Ms. Emma Anderson, Trea
surer; Ms. Gwen G hah am, Historian.
