M-I Abrams Tank Assigned
The projected assignment
of the sixty-three new M-l
Abrams tanks to the 2-252d
Armor Battalion of the North
Carolina Army National
Guard in Raeford has created
a lot of excitement and
anticipation statewide and
nationwide. Being the first
reserve component organiza
tion to receive the new M-l
Abrams tanks, this battalion
has gained international at
tention.
With the introduction of the
new M-l Abrams tank, the
North Carolina Army National
Guard has a need for person
nel to be trained in the
operation of this new com
puterized weaponry. The NC
National Guard has announc
ed the assignment of a
30-man platoon to be filled by
qualified Guardsmen from
this area. This platoon will
train under the "buddv pla
toon" concept... progressing
through the entire Basic
Training and Advanced Train
ing phases as one group.
These soldiers will be the first
in the State trained to operate
as crewmen on the M-l
Abrams. Departure is sched
uled for 14 March 1983 so the
time is now for those men in
this area who warn to become
"the first" M-l Abrams tank
crewmen in North Carolina
Army National Guard.
? /
The 2-252d Armor Battalion
has units in the Red Springs,
Laurinburg, Albemarle, San
ford, Southern Pines and
Raeford areas. Contact the
National Guard recruiter,
Charles R. Burns, SFC, for
more details at 843-4031 in
Red Springs, NC 28377.
The M-l Abrams tanks is
the newest tactical fighting
vehicle,, and is capable of
travelling at SO mph and firing
while mobile. It's gun
system is computerized to
insure target hits while trave
lling at higher speeds or
stationery positions. ~
