Mi. this summer. The students, all participants of the Robeson County Health Careers Awareness project, were se lected through a very com petitive process involving all Indian tribes throughout the United States. Through the students' participation in the H-CAP program, they were identified and recommended for the eight week program held June 14 - August It. 1984. I he Headlands Indian Health Career program is designed to enrich the science and mathematics back grounds of Native American students interested in health careers. The curriculum con sists of courses in Biology. Chemistry. Physics and Ma thematics. The program is also intended to make, stu dents aware of the variety of health careers and the great need for Native Americans in the health professions. Each student participant will be provided with free room, board and tuition during the program as well as round'trip air fare. The high school seniors will earn four hours of college credit as a result of their participation in the Headlands program. People from across the country and be yond are clearing their throats for some serious noise-making at Spiveys Corner in the 16th annual National Hollerin' Contest June 16. "Hollerin' is serious," said Ermon Godwin, president of the event, adding that hollering is not just screaming or yelling. "That's what you and I would do if we got scared," he said. "Hollerin' is controlled sound, like Tarzan. Whenever he yelled, Jane and Boy and the monkeys knew what be wanted." Godwin said hollering originated in the rural areas of the state. "The farmer would holler in the morning going to the fields and in the evening coming in from his work," he*'said. "He did it for sheer enjoyment and to tell his neighbor, a half-mile away, that he was up and working." The 49 residents of the crossroads community expect to whoop it up with about 10,000 folks from across the nation.
