Director addresses rape
problem at Pembroke
BPW meeting
Ms. Crites believes that most
people are unimformed about both
the victims of rape and rapists. Rape
victims include males as well as
females, and contrary to popular
beleif, most rape victims do not
invite their attacks. Rapes, too,
rarely occur in dark alleys, Ms.
Crites explained. Rather, favorite
settings include private homes,
public parks, and university cam
puses. "Date rapes" accoutn for an
estimated 84 percent of the attacks
on coeds, and often alcohol or drugs
prompt or accompany those attacks.
Ms. Crites provided a variety of
statistics to reinforce her contention
that, both nationally and regionally,
rape is on the rise. She indicated, for
instance, that "Before a woman
reahes the age of 18, there is one in
four chances that she will have been
assaulted." That percentage, she
suggested, may be higher in Robe
son County because so few rapes are
reported here. "For every rape
reported," she noted, "there are
between eight and ten that go
unreported."
Rape crisis volunteers, Ms. Crites
concluded, are needed if the county
is to assit the growing number of
victims. Volunteer training programs
are available regualriy at Robeson
Community College, Ms. Crites
explained, and citizens interested in
qualifying via one of those programs,
usually just two days long, can obtain
details from Ms. Crites at 739-6278.
Ms. Crites believes that rape can be
controlled through a better-informed
and better-prepared citizenry. ?

THIRTY FIVE YEARS AGO
We've just observed another Labor Day. What
impressed me most this time was the contrast between
this year's cool, comfortable weather and the super-hot
as well as warm and friendly-welcome that greeted me
the day I arrived in Pembroke from my three-year
assignment in Caswell County (next to the Virginia
border) back in 1956.
At that time the Jesse Minnie family (recently returned
from their missionary work in India) beginning a two
year tenure at First Methodist Church here in Pembroke,
betill have a picture in my mind of the beautiful flowers
they grew in the parsonage yard next to Railroad Street.
in July of 1958 the Minnices were assigned to Sanford.
la their place arrived Robert Man gum, a recent graduate
at' Asbury Seminary in Kentucky.
It was obvious that Bob and Neila Mangum were a
dedicated young Christian couple, as well as being
devoted parents to their six-month-old daughter, Phyllis.
But 1 didn't dream that all of us would still be here in
?e Pembroke area 33 years later. Or that Bob (along with
Harvey Lowry) would officiate at Leon's and my wedding
tne following year. Or that the lives of our two families
would become so intertwined.
More about this later.
OUR LEADERS NEED OUR PRAYERS
Let's keep praying for all of our leaden. President
Bush, Secretary of State Baker, members of Congress,
and everyone else in a position to make vital decisions for
our country and our world.
A lot of us have been in a state of confusion during the
past few weeks, some of us long before that, ft looks to me
as though a lot of manipulating has been going onin the
Soviet Union. But, I believe, God alone knows exactly how
much, and by whom.
And He alone knows solutions to problems that seem
unsolvable. So, let's keep praying for every person in
Robeson County and every person, all around the world.
MOTHER
Also, I would appreciate your prayers for mj mother,
now 94, who recently had another, not-quite- so-fleeting,
of the infrequent spells that appear to be temporary mini
strokes. So far, sheftas come out of each one okay. But
her three scattered children are trying to work out plana
so she will not have to be alone.
