Lord, Teach Us To Pray
(Matt. 6:5-15)
I. How Not To Prav (Matt 6 58)
II How ToPra> (Mall 6:9-11)
III. How to Be Forgive (Matt
6 14-15)
/. How Hot To Pray
(Matt. 6:5-8)
In our lesson this week Jesus
is teaching his disciples about
prayer He starts by telling them
what they should not do as they
pray Prayer is a privilege that
God has given to us to give thanks
to him. to make supplication
and for forgiveness Therefore we
need to know the proper way to
pray so that God will hear and.
answer our prayers
The Pharisees made a habit of
praying in public places and aloud
so that others could hear them.
They wanted other people to see
them and think that they were spiritual
Jesus called them
hypocrites because they wanted to
be seenofmen. Sometimes people
want to be heard as well as: seen
If peoplcare lookingfor reward
from thiskind of praying, they have
already have their reward
The disciples w ere told by Jesus
that they should pray in private and
God would see and reward them
openly There is nothing wrong
with praying in public, but when
it is done just to be seen then it is in
vain.
Jesus also instructed the
disciples that when they prayed not
to repeat the same thing over and
over. Long prayers are not necessary
to get God's" attention. Our
father knows what our needs arc
even before we ask. We do not
need to have a long drawn out
prayer to get what we want from
God
11. How To Pray
(Matt 6:9-13)
Jesus gave to us and the disciples
a model prayer or n outline of now
we should pray . This has came to
be known as the Lord's Prayers. In
v reality this is the disciples prayer
given to them by Jesus. He did not
nccd'to pray this prayer because
he did nol need lorgi\eness lor a in
sin
Jesus tells us to recognize God
as the Father and that he is in
heaven Then wc arc to honor his
name because he is Hol> Then
Jesus points to the kingdom come
or grace and also the kingdom of
God on Earth when there is no
more sin
God wants his will to c done 011
this Earth just like it is being done
on Heaven. There is nothing to
hinder the will of God in Heaven
Oncdayinthc not to distant future
God will not be hindered 011 this
Earth. We arc to seek God for our
needs on a daily basis not weekly or
monthly The concern of every
child of God should only be the
need of today, because tomorrow is
not promised. We can understand
this better w hen we understand thai
at the time of this prayer many
peoplcwerc w orking by the day and
getting paid at the end of the day
We want God to forgi\ c us ol
our sins, so we must forgive those
who sin against us God has a
condition for forgiving his children
a nd that is we must forgiv e others
also If we hold a grudge against
someone God will not forgive us
Our prayer is then hindered from
being heard and answered
Finally we are instructed to ask
for guidance that we do not fall into
temptation. God does not tempt his
children, but he allows it to happen,
bul we need to seek his leadership
that we may be able to avoid or
overcome temptations. Also in
our prayi ng we need to give God the
praise and glory that he is so
worthy of
III. How To Be Forgiven
(Matt. 6:14-15)
Jesus put forth a very simple
principle here about forgiveness
He told us that if we forgave those
that w ronged us. God would forgive
us of our wrongs If we fail to do
that then we will not be forgiven
When we have unconfcsscd sins
in our life, our relationship with our
Father is broken. Holding grudges
or not forgiving others can cause us
. to lose our joy. Let us pray that as
Christians, we will alway s have a
forgiving spirit.
Unsaved. I urge you to come to
Jesus and repent of your sins and
1 receive God's forgiveness. God
lived you so much that he sent his
son to Jesus to die for our sins.
God loves you Pray for us God
bless you until next week.
